1996 Nellie Cashman Woman Entrepreneur of the Year

Five Puget Sound business owners have been chosen as finalists for the 1996 Nellie Cashman Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, recognizing their achievement and innovation in business leadership and community involvement: Molly Adolfson, president of Adolfson Associates, Inc., a Seattle-based environmental services firm; Maureen Dickson, president of Cap Sante Marine, Ltd., which provides custom yacht manufacturing and a full-service marine facility in Anacortes; Kay Hirai, president of Studio 904, which offers hair care services to men, women, and children; Lynn Richardson, CEO of Richardson International, Ltd., a Bellevue firm specializing in management and marketing services for Russian and Polish seafood companies; Margaret Witte, chairman and CEO of Royal Oak Mines, a Kirkland-based firm which processes gold ore. The 1996 winner of the award will be announced on September 17 in a ceremony hosted by Patti Payne of KIRO Radio at the Westin Hotel.

Fishing Advisory Councils

James Lone and Dr. Walter Pereyra, both of Seattle, have been reappointed to federal fisheries advisory bodies by Gov. Mike Lowry. Lone has been appointed to a three-year term on the Pacific Fishery Management Council. The 13-person council advises the US Secretary of Commerce on fishing issues off the Washington, Oregon and California coasts. Pereyra has been appointed to a third term on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. The council advises the US Secretary of Commerce on fishing issues involving Alaskan waters.

UW Academic Medical Center/Northwest Hospital

The University of Washington Academic Medical Center and Northwest Hospital have signed a memo of understanding as the first step toward planning and developing joint clinical programs. The goal is to provide top-quality medical services at the lowest possible cost to consumers, while simultaneously enhancing the academic programs of the UW Academic Medical Center. The initial focus will be on the development of a cooperative heart program ranging from routine diagnostic cardiology services to the most sophisticated interventional cardiology and open-heart surgery.

Boston Market

Boston Market will open its 27th restaurant in Washington state at 15842 First Avenue, Burien. The opening will be held on August 5. Of these 27 restaurants, 23 are in the Puget Sound region. The company plans on opening 11 additional stores in Washington and Oregon before year-end. 1996 International Conference of Women in Communications Women in Communications' 1996 International Conference on Information and Technology will be held October 4-6 at the Red Lion Jantzen Beach Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Craters & Freighters Franchise Company has announced the opening of its newest Crater & Freighters specialty shipping center in the Seattle-Tacoma area.
