Seattle Goodwill

Seattle Goodwill, the non-profit organization largely supported by its thrift store revenues, has named H. Martin Smith, Jr., of Martin Smith, Inc., as the board chair. Seattle Goodwill also welcomes five new board members: Ed Belleba, Microsoft; Alan Cornell, Baugh Construction; Jan Sinegal, community volunteer; J. Shannon Sweatte, Fisher Radio; and Sue Tabor, Nordstrom's.

Battelle Memorial Institute

Richard Adams has been named director of human resources at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Pacific Northwest is operated by Battelle Memorial Institute. As director, Adams will manage a staff of 74 people involved in development and diversity, recruitment and selection, performance management and rewards, and compliance.

Elgin DDB

Elgin DDB, Seattle, has added new members to the following departments. In the media division, Julie Furlong has joined as public service director; Karyn Waas as co-op coordinator and Ryan Mendenhall as media assistant planner/buyer. The Emerging Technologies Group (ETG) has hired Chris Kent as account executive and Rick Keller as an administrative assistant. Sue Hurley joins Elgin DDB as public service planner. Elgin DDB is a full-service communications company and a subsidiary of DDB Worldwide.

Centennial Bancorp/Bank of Southern Oregon

Centennial Bancorp and Bank of Southern Oregon have ended their merger discussions. No definite agreement has been signed. Bank of Southern Oregon operates two offices in Medford. Centennial Bancorp is the parent corporation of Eugene's Centennial Bank, which operates six banking offices: three in Eugene, one in Springfield, one in Cottage Grove, and one in the Portland metropolitan area.

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) has appointed Jeff Keck vice president of operations and Mark Tabbutt Alaska general manager. Keck will be responsible for all land operations and sales in the Lower 48 states. Tabbutt will oversee all operations, sales and marketing, traffic, and administration in Alaska, including the Fairbanks terminal and activities on the Kenai Peninsula. TOTE is an Alaska shipping company operating three roll-on/roll-of cargoships exclusively in the Alaska trade between the ports of Tacoma and Anchorage. Its parent company is Totem Resources Corporation (TRC) which is headquartered in Seattle.

Elgin Syferd

Elgin Syferd Public Relations has added three new members to its Strategic Environmental Management Group (SEM). Janda Black joins the group as a senior account executive, Rob Walgreen has been hired as an assistant account executive, and John Voldal has been added as account coordinator. Lori Albert has joined Elgin Syferd as assistant account manager. Located in Seattle, Elgin Syferd offers integrated communications solutions and public relations expertise to clients in the environmental, technology, international, sports marketing, events, retail, health care, financial, transportation and travel industries.

Lynden Transport

Lynden Transport has been named a 1996 Quest for Quality "Best of the Best" carrier by Distribution Magazine. It is the first all-Alaska Transporter to receive this award. The award is based on an industry-wide survey of shippers that evaluate carriers on key performance criteria, including timeliness of service, equipment and operations, and level of customer service. Lynden Transport will be recognized for its achievements in the August edition of the magazine and at the special Quest for Quality Awards Luncheon on Oct. 16, during the North American Warehouse and Distribution Exposition and Conference Show in Atlanta, GA. Lynden Transport in a full service regional trucker serving all points in Alaska.

Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association

The 38th annual Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association Tree Fair and Trade Show will be held September 6 & 7, at the Portland Airport Holiday Inn. The show will run Friday, noon - 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Admittance is $10 for PNWCTA members and $15 for non-members. The College Fund/UNCF

The Northwest Area Office of The College Fund/UNCF has recently awarded $115,000 in scholarships to 40 students from Washington and Oregon. The College Fund/UNCF has been the nation's most successful higher education program. For more than 50 years, the organization has helped to send students to school by providing them with funds for tuition, books and other expenses. Locally, major contributors include: Price/Costco, Seattle Mariners, State of Washington, King County and City of Seattle Employee Campaigns.
