The Seattle law firm of Cusack & Knowles has appointed William Knowles as managing partner. Williams, who succeeds co-founder Kenneth Cusack, focuses his practice on civil litigation.
Bill Swedish has been named chief technology officer for the Port of Seattle. He will lead the Port's upgrade to an open client/server architecture for its computer information systems. Swedish was previously management information systems director for Seattle Pacific Industries (UnionBay Sportswear).
Commission Chair Jan Kumasaka has announced the appointment of Idolina Reta to acting executive director of the Washington State Human Rights Commission. Reta will serve in the position while the Commission conducts a search for a permanent executive director.
The Safeco board of directors announced the following promotions for the Safeco Insurance Company of America: Jack Stiegler, vice president for the National Distribution Division; Raphael Madison, assistant vice president and Kevin Kirby, assistant vice president. Michael Hughes has been promoted to assistant vice president for Safeco Asset Management Company.
The U.S. Government has awarded its ISO 9001 Statement of Qualification to Fatigue Technology Inc. (FTI), a supplier of aerospace tooling and components for increasing the fatigue life and structural integrity of aircraft. FTI is the second corporation in Seattle to receive this certification. ISO, the International Standards Organization, provides guidelines for establishing industry quality. FTI is a leader in cold expansion technology, a process that increases the fatigue life of holes in metal structures.

Bellevue-based Metapath Corporation has hired Jeff Feinstein as vice president of sales. Feinstein will be responsible for overseeing all sales activities, including new account generation, account management, and channel development. Metapath provides software for telecommunications carriers.
Nancy Nakayama has joined the Seattle law firm of Graham & James/Riddell Williams as a principal in its Intellectual Property Group. Nakayama's practice focuses on intellectual property matters including licensing and technology protection, and on international business transactions.
Interwest Bancorp has selected Safeco Mutual Funds to provide record keeping, administration and a variety of 100% No-Load investment options for it 401(k) plan. Safeco has been pursuing the local 401(k) market over the past few years as employers have moved from traditional pension plans to employee-directed retirement savings plans. Interwest's new plan will provide greater flexibility and control for employees over their retirement savings, as well as reduced costs for the company and more accurate reporting.
