Roger Merritt has been named business development manager for Facilities West, a project-based facilities management consulting firm with offices in Bellevue and the Southwest. Merritt previously worked for Allstate Insurance and AAA of Washington.
Former U.S. Ambassador Edward E. Wolfe has been appointed chair of the board of directors of Big Brothers of King County for 1997. Wolfe has served on the board for the past three years. In the Reagan and Bush administrations, Wolfe served as deputy assistant secretary of state for oceans and fisheries affairs. He currently practices maritime, business and international trade law with the Seattle firm Junker & Thompson. Jann Blackbourn has been named vice chairman of the board. She is CEO of Washington Transit Advertising.
Kent-based Caravali Coffees won an Award of Excellence and Best of Show gold medal from the American Tasting Institute in San Francisco. Judges considered Caravali to be the best food-service coffee in the nation.
At McCormick & Schmick's Northwest Taste coffee tasting competition this week, Java Trading Company won the Best Overall Coffee trophy. The company also won awards in the Best All Day Coffee and Best Companion to a Cigar categories.
Intermec, an Everett subsidiary of Western Atlas, Inc., this week announced that its parent company would acquire the common stock of Norand Corporation for $33.50 per share. Intermec is in the automated data collection business, producing bar-code printers and scanners, hand-held computers and wireless radio transmission devices. Norand's products are complementary to Intermec's. Norand will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Atlas.
Northwest regional law firm Foster Pepper & Shefelman has added Anne Tiura of counsel in the firm's Seattle real estate group. She previously worked 10 years with Smith, Smart, Hancock, Tabler & Schwensen. Three new partners have also been named by the firm. Christopher Alson practices in bankruptcy law and commercial litigation. Marc Kretschmer concentrates on real estate, construction and public procurement. Matthew Smith focuses his practice on preventive counseling and litigation, particularly in employment issues.

David Irion has been appointed dealer sales manager at Canyon Creek Cabinet Company located in Woodinville.
Trans-Ocean Products, a Bellingham-based surimi products manufacturer and marketer, has hired Louis Shaheen as vice president, sales and marketing; Alan Lipocky, national sales manager, and John Root as southeast regional sales manager. All three recently held similar positions at Jana Brands, Inc. of Natick, Mass. Trans-Ocean, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maruha Corporation of Tokyo, recently purchased the surimi products division of Jana Brands.
Bellevue-based Pacific Financial Services Corporation has hired Merlin Prater as an account executive.
The Bellevue-based advertising agency of Matthaeus Halverson Ayriss has taken on the direct marketing portion of Windstar Cruises. Windstar Cruises is a part of Holland American Line Company based in Seattle.
NW Medical Teams International (NWMTI) has announced that it will open a European office in Bucharest, Romania, on March 1. Laurent Jacques LaBrie has been hired as the European director. LaBrie and the NWMTI staff will concentrate on five to seven orphanages creating models of how to raise, house and stimulate children to further healthy development. NWMTI is a nonprofit agency that provides assistance to vulnerable people suffering from war, epidemics, poverty, physical deformities and natural disasters.
GTW Corporation, a project management consulting firm based in Federal Way, has opened a Northeast Service Center in Philadelphia. Frank Walker, president, has relocated to oversee the operation of the new office and expand international operations from an East Coast base. Bruce Taylor, vice president, will be responsible for software development services, west coast and international marketing and product development. Patricia Palmer, vice president and CFO, will act as managing partner for West Coast operations, management consulting and corporate services.
Sherrilynne Fuller, director of the University of Washington's Health Sciences Libraries and Information Center, has been selected by President Clinton to serve on a new committee to advise on the future of electronic information and communications. The advisory committee will provide advice on all areas of high-performance computing, communications and information technologies, as well as guide the Clinton Administration's efforts to accelerate development and adoptions on information technologies into the next century.
Dan P. Danilov, a Seattle immigration lawyer, was chosen to speak at the Statue of Liberty this week, presenting a report about new immigration laws to the staff and tour guides at the monument.
