Dennis Reynolds, a partner in the Seattle law firm of Williams, Kastner & Gibbs, has been named chairman of the Legal Trust Committee of the Building Association of Washington. The committee works on affordable housing legal issues by seeking out and supporting cases that will set precedents valuable to Washington builders.
Shelly Cohen has joined Hawkins & Company as senior account manager. She was formerly principal in HRX Employment Law Consulting and is the former acting human resources director for Seattle City Light.
Three recipients of the first Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Awards have been named by Pacific Lutheran University's School of Business. The winners are Jeff Evans, an Olympia resident and college student who is the owner of Simply Magic, a company which performs magic shows for schools, libraries and private parties. Daniel Finley, a high school student in Federal Way, is president of the-view.com, an online web site which researches and reviews electronics hardware. Shane Hardin is a Buckley high school student who runs a network installation business called HARDinSOFT. Each will receive $500. The award goes to high school or college students who are running businesses.
Chuck Riley, executive vice president of US Bank of Washington, is the chairman of the Klondike Gold Rush Centennial Committee of Washington. On Saturday, July 17, 1897, the S.S. Portland arrived in Seattle with over a "ton of gold" on board. This year on July 19 the Spirit of '98 will arrive with descendants of Klondike miners. Festivities will take place at Pier 57 through Sunday evening. Riley's grandfather was a Klondike miner.
Chuck Whittlesey has been promoted to director of business development for Morrison Knudsen Corporation. His duties include pursuing intelligence and information that will lead to new business for the company in areas west of the Mississippi and into the Pacific Basin. Whittlesey's office is in Bellevue. He is also area manager for the Northwest. MK is involved in environmental work, heavy construction, transportation, industrial operations, power and mining.

Susan Goplen and Karen Jorgensen-Peters have joined the Seattle law office of Betts, Patterson & Mines, P.S., as associates. Goplen's practice focuses on domestic relations and commercial litigation. Jorgensen-Peters previously served as a judicial clerk to Washington Court of Appeals Judge C.C. Bridgewater.
Teena Killian has been elected partner at the Seattle law firm of Lane Powell Spears Lubersky LLP. Killian concentrates her practice in the area of professional liability, labor and employment and insurance litigation.
Lewis Zirkle, Jr., an orthopedic surgeion from Richland, is the 1997 recipient of the Kiwanis World Service Medal. The award honors individuals who have dedicated a substantial part of their lives to serving others.
Paul Peterson, director of the Harvard Center for American Policy Studies, will present a lecture on the federal government's transfer of fiscal responsibility to state and local governments and the nonprofit sector and its implications on March 4 at The Evergreen State College. The lecture will begin at 1 p.m. in Library 4300. Following the lecture, state and local specialists will lead panel discussion from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on welfare reform, public health and environmental issues, along with potential impacts to state government. The symposium is sponsored by Evergreen's Master of Public Administration program and the Washington State Department of Personnel. Electronic Arts (EA), a San Mateo, Calif.-based entertainment software company, is opening a Seattle-area game-design facility called Electronic Arts Seattle (EAS). EAS will operate under the direction of Anthony Garcia, founder of Microsoft's entertainment business unit.
The board of directors of Puget Sound Energy, a newly formed gas and electric utility, have elected seven people to serve as officers of the utility. They join CEO Richard R. Sonstelie, Vice Chairman William S. Weaver, and Vice President and CFO James P. Torgerson. The new officers are Ronald E. Davis, vice president for regulation and utility planning; William A. Gaines, vice president of energy supply; Timothy J. Hogan, vice president of system operations; Gary B. Swofford, vice president of customer operations; Sheila Manus, vice president of corporate relations; Donald E. Gaines, treasurer; and James W. Eldredge, corporate secretary.
James A. Wenger has been named manager of the Portland, Ore. office of Red Shield Insurance Company. He has been in the insurance industry since 1975, with experience in underwriting and management. Red Shield's Portland office handles a variety of insurance functions for general liability, inland marine, houseboats and adult care facilities. The company markets its property and casualty lines mainly in Washington and Oregon.
George S. Eltman has joined the American Arbitration Association in the capacity of mediator and arbitrator. Formerly judge of the Territorial Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Eltman has relocated to Portland, Ore. He will work in disputes related to commercial business, employment, family, personal injury and real property through the AMA's Seattle office.
