The following businesses were honored at the fourth annual "In Pursuit of Excellence" Awards luncheon, sponsored by the Kent Chamber of Commerce, The Boeing Company, Shannon & Associates, LLP and Seafirst Bank; Sleep Country USA, Small business of the year - gross sales over $2 million; Best Western ChoiceLodge, Small business of the year - gross sales under $2 million; B-twelve Associates, Inc., an environmental services firm, Women/Minority owned business of the year; Sir Speedy Printing Center, Green company of the year; City Beverages Distributors, Inc., Leadership Company of the Year.
Jerry Knutson, dean of business administration and professor of economics and finance at Saint Martins College in Olympia, has been selected for The Boeing Company's Business Faculty Fellowship Project, "Integrated Business Planning". Participants will learn more about industrial competitiveness and business management through business processes and mentorship by Boeing executives, enabling professors to compare their actual industry experiences against their school's business curriculum. The summer project will include business professors from eight Northwest universities and colleges. Also, Knutson traveled this month to Sichuan Province, China, to promote closer educational ties and exchanges between students and faculty of Saint Martins and Sichuan Union University. The goal is to develop and strengthen the international business curricula between the two schools.
On June 30th , Seattle's Sorrento Hotel will reopen its popular outdoor Italian cafe, Piazza Capri. The Sorrento is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
The Kreielsheimer Foundation has awarded a $1,000,000 endowment grant to the Seattle Repertory Theatre Foundation to establish the Daniel Sullivan Artistic Development Fund. The award will enable The Rep to continue to pursue innovative live theatre, including world premieres of new plays and adaptations of existing works. Starting July 1st, The Rep will have a new artistic director Sharon Ott. Ott will be accepting a Special Tony Award for regional theatre given to the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, which was announced with the 1997 Tony Award nominations. The Antionette Perry "Tony" Award is based on recommendation by the American Theatre Critics Association and is given to a regional theatre company that has displayed a continuous level of artistic achievement contributing to the growth of theatre nationally.
Clayton Jones, Jr. of Jones Stevedoring has received the 1997 Puget Sound Maritime Achievement Award. Jones has been recognized in the stevedoring industry as a leading safety advocate. The award is sponsored by The Maritime Directory and the Seattle Maritime Week Committee.
Sharon McGavick, dean of instruction at Green River Community College in Auburn, has been chosen as the new president of Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) in Lakewood.

N. Christian (Chris) Anderson III, president and publisher of The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Col., has been elected to the Blethen Corporation Board of directors. The board is a private family corporation whose major asset is the Seattle Times Company.
Paul A. Merriman & Associates, a Seattle registered investment advisor, has appointed Scott Harrison as vice president. Harrison will be in charge of business development for the firm.
The Spokane Area Economic Development Council (EDC) announced that ERISA QDRO Corp. (EQC), Santa Monica, Calif., will relocate its corporate headquarters to Spokane later this year. EQC, a pension consulting firm that specializes in the preparation of domestic relations orders, will relocate three employees with the company. The firm expects to hire locally as it expands its client base.
Smith Ovitt has rejoined Kent-based Heart Interface as renewable energy sales manager. Heart Interface is a provider of DC-AC technology.
Paul Myhre, chief financial officer, LTC, Inc., has been elected president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute (FEI) for 1997-98. Other elected officers include; Kenneth Roberts, Global Transportation Services, Inc., president-elect; Rick Swindler, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, secretary; and James Eldredge Puget Sound Energy, treasurer. Directors for 1997-98 include Katherine Anderson, Timothy Bowman, Jeffrey Bell, Jerry Lee, Jeanette Douglas, Kenneth Avedisian, Brian Key, Gloria Ishii, Bradley Wiens, Michael Wilson, and Douglas Wisdorf.
Huntron Inc., a provider of power-off trouble shooting and production test instrumentation based in Mill Creek, has appointed Ron Mewett as marketing manager. He will be responsible for indentifying opportunities for the company's growth.
IDD Aerospace Corporation of Redmond has been awarded a contract by Honeywell Air Transport Systems, Phoenix, for development and production of the fully-integrated Glareshield control Displays for the McDonnell Douglas MD-95 aircraft.
Mary Baretich has joined Washington Transit Advertising as an account executive in the Pierce County office.
