Girl Scouts

At the annual Girl Scouts Totem Council's board of directors meeting the following were appointed to the committee: Norma Huggins, King County Superior Court; Cynthia Gould, The Boeing Company; Michele Godvin, Coopers & Lybrand; Sharon Frey, University of Washington's Educational Outreach Program; Jane Inglis, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services' Foster Grandparents Program; Germaine Covington; and Sandie Ledray, Brookside Soap Company.

TechWave

Seattle-based TechWave Inc., a digital commerce and content delivery company, announced its first online digital store, The Learning Center (http://www.TheLearningCenter.com). The Learning Center provides training content online with customized training solutions for corporations as well as individuals. The training courses are in software, technical, health and safety, and human resources. They can be delivered from the store in a variety of media, including the Internet, corporate Intranet, CD-ROM, video and books. Dwayne Walker is president and CEO of TechWave.

UniGroup

Michael MacDowell, president of City Moving Systems in Kent, has been elected to the board of directors of United Van Lines, Inc. and its parent company, UniGroup, Inc.

The Fearey Group

The Fearey Group has been chosen by The Retail Group, a strategic planning and design firm in Seattle, to manage its national public relations activities.

Caffe Appassionato

Seattle's Caffe Appassionato is opening a new coffee house in the Queen Anne neighborhood, located on the ground floor of the Galer Gardens complex at Queen Anne Avenue North and West Galer Street. Caffe Appassionato currently has 24 stores in its system that are either under construction or operating in Dallas, Texas; Bethesda, Md.; Marblehead and Newtonville, Mass.; Laguna Beach, Calif.; Bend, Ore.; and the greater Seattle area.

Mackie Designs

Mackie Designs, Inc., a Woodinville-based designer, manufacturer and marketer of professional audio equipment, has appointed William Garrard as chief financial officer.

Tim Whitty has joined the Trust Department at the Everett branch of Frontier Bank as vice president and manager.

Marten & Brown

Gregory Costello has joined the Seattle law office of Marten & Brown LLP. Costello has experience in environmental and commercial litigation, and represents clients in hazardous waste, natural resource, land use, forestry and permitting disputes.

Virginia Mason

Margaret Adam has joined the Center for Women's Health and General Internal Medicine at Virginia Mason Medical Center.

MiraMed Institute

MiraMed Institute, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that gives humanitarian aid to orphans and displaced children internationally, announced the election of new board members and officers for 1997-98; Ann Hayes, Immunex Corp., secretary; Cyndi Upthegrove, Groen Brothers Aviation, and Phyllis VanderNeer, treasurer.

Thomas J. Owens

Thomas J. Owens, formerly with the Seattle office of Lane Powell Spears Lubersky, has opened his own law office in downtown Seattle. His practice focuses on employment cases, including discrimination, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, and wage disputes.

Family Services

Family Services of King County has added Sherry Nebel, corporate public relations manager for The Boeing Company and Kathy Wright, an investment executive with Dain Bosworth, to its board of directors. Family Services provides support and counseling services to individuals and families.

Spacelabs Medical, Inc.

Redmond-based Spacelabs Medical, Inc. has purchased an interest in Tempus Software, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida. With the investment, Spacelabs Medical will have worldwide rights to market Encompass, a patient scheduling system developed by Tempus used by hospitals, clinics, physician offices and home health providers.

NDOA

The Northwest Development Officers Association (NDOA) elected new officers for 1997-98 at its annual meeting. Newly elected are: Jackie Ostrom , president; Marcia McGreevy, vice president of membership; Rodney Wheeler, vice president of programs; Susan Howlett, vice president of conferences; Michelle Hasson , secretary; and Ted Lord, treasurer. Ostrom succeeds immediate past president Barry McConnell. NDOA's mission is to advance philanthropy and the development profession in the Northwest.

Denny Regrade Business Improvement Area

Eight businesses are the first recipients of the Belltown Beauty Brigade Awards, presented by the Denny Regrade Business Improvement Area to local businesses and properties which do an outstanding job of making their front and sidewalk areas attractive and maintaining them well. The recipients are Aaron Diamond Floral, Belltown Court, Belltown Feed & Seed, Blu Canary, Intracorp, Kroll Map Company, Macrina Bakery, and Peninsula Gallery.

United Way

The board of directors of United Way King County have approved the appointment of Joanne Harrell as president and chief professional officer beginning in July. Harrell is currently the vice president and chief executive officer for US West Nebraska operations, where she is responsible for total state financial performance. Prior to that she was the vice president and general manager, public services for US West, based in Seattle.
