The Association of Washington Business honored 16 companies and individuals for contributions to their communities. The 2001 Brigg's winner is Mike Porter, president of Tacoma Diesel and Equipment. Runners up for the award were: Paula Perry, an environmental manager for Boeing, and Daphne Daus Frickelton, director of marketing for Peninsula Light Co. in Gig Harbor. Honored for their contributions in education are Cadman of Redmond, Bellingham Cold Storage and Underwriters Lab. of Camas. Plus-Weyerhaeuser of Federal Way and Doyle Electric of Walla Walla were recognized for helping people in need. The Marysville Chamber of Commerce, Kaiser Permanente of Vancouver and Fluor Hanford of Tri-Cities were honored for mobilizing people. Tacoma Diesel, Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works, Spokane and Crown Distributing Co. of Everett were honored for volunteerism. Puget Sound Refining of Anacortes won a certificate of merit for support for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce announced winners of the Eastside Business Awards. The Eastside Business of the Year is BSquare. The Corporate Citizenship Award goes to Oki Development. The Eastside Economic Leadership Award co-winners are Clark Nuber and Columbia Athletic Clubs. The Eastside Tourism Award goes to Argosy Cruises and Apex Learning won the Innovative Service Award. The Innovative Technology Award goes to Molecumetics.
The Municipal League of King County recently recognized civic involvement. The Citizen of the Year is Assunta Ng, publisher, Northwest Asian Weekly and the Seattle Chinese Post; Public Employee of the Year is Jim Diers, director, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods; Public Official of the Year is Larry Phillips, Metropolitan King County Council; Business of the Year is Washington Mutual; Organization of the Year is Providence Mount St. Vincent; James R. Ellis Regional Leadership Award goes to Margaret Pageler, Seattle City Council; Warren G. Magnuson Award goes to Richard Thompson; Doug Mason Memorial Award to LaiLani Ovalles and Norma Straw.
OpenWorks, a developer of turnkey commercial cleaning and maintenance franchises, announced that Michelle Dux has been promoted to regional director of the company’s Washington division, based in its office in Bellevue. Dux will oversee all sales and operational activities for the region

McKleskey Enterprises announced that Bob Schultz has been appointed to the newly created position of sales manager for its municipal and construction equipment division.
Schultz brings more than 33 years of industry experience to the position. He will work to promote custom equipment products and services for both Cascade Container-Fab Co. and Carson Transportation Equipment. His emphasis will be aimed at both public works departments and private contractors in fields such as demolition, underground utility and pipe construction, and improvements for both public and private infrastructure work.

Boyd Coffee Co., a Portland-based family-owned specialty coffee roaster, was awarded the 2001 Governor's International Business Achievement Award as Oregon Global Trader of the Year. Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber presented the award on May 23 at a luncheon organized by the Pacific Northwest International Trade Association. The coffee company was recognized for its contributions to Oregon's economy through employment, innovation and new product development.
The Museum of Glass in Tacoma announced the appointment of Mary Folsom to its board of trustees. Folsom has been involved in the Puget Sound region for more than 10 years. Most recently, she served as chair of the board for Charles Wright Academy, and as a trustee for the Governor's Mansion Foundation and the Tacoma Garden Club. In addition, recent appointees to the museum's board include Llewelyn Pritchard of Seattle, a partner at the law firm of Helsell Fetterman.
