Microsoft appointed Marshall C. Phelps Jr. corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for intellectual property. Phelps joins Microsoft after a 28-year career with IBM, where he was vice president for intellectual property and licensing, and played a key role in building IBM's standards, telecommunications policy, industry relations, patent licensing program and intellectual property portfolio development.
Steven Haynes has been appointed to Woodland Park Zoo's 44-member board of directors. Haynes is a 20-year veteran of U.S. Bank and currently serves as senior vice president in its Northwest regional commercial banking group.

Columbia Hospitality, a Seattle-based hospitality management and consulting company, named Lenny Zilz vice president. Zilz will also serve as general manager for the Washington Mutual Leadership Center at Cedarbrook. The company also promoted Bret Matteson from vice president to chief operating officer, Shelley Tomberg from vice president of marketing to vice president and Bob Taylor and Erik Ruud to project managers.
Seattle's NetMotion Wireless named Walter R. Boos as its senior vice president of worldwide sales. Most recently, Boos was CEO of Bidpath Corp. NetMotion Wireless develops software that makes wireless data networks reliable and secure.
Joe Vaz has been named an agent by Country Insurance & Financial Services. He recently completed the company's new agent school and will be based in Lynden.
Nicolette L. Pias has been named an associate at Williams, Kastner & Gibbs. Pias is a graduate of the Seattle University School of Law and previously served as a summer associate and law clerk for the firm. She will focus her practice on general litigation with an emphasis on labor & employment issues. She will be based in the firm's Seattle office.
