Charley, Frances and Ivan are putting Florida's buildings and its building codes to the test. This year's hyperactive hurricane season, with eight named storms in the month of August alone, has killed scores and destroyed thousands of buildings in several nations.
The Associated Press has reported that Hurricane Charley flattened more than 12,000 homes in Florida. More than 350,000 Floridians have applied for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency; authorities have cleared 7.5 million cubic yards of debris.
