Heathman Hotel — Portland

Photos from Provenance Hotels [enlarge]

Portland's Heathman Hotel, located at 1001 SW. Broadway, has completed a $13 million renovation.

Updates to the hotel, which opened in 1927, include all 151 rooms and public spaces. The new design reflects the building's history, but with updates to make it light, bright and contemporary.

The hotel's collection of autographed books inspired a literary theme in public spaces. More than 3,000 volumes signed by their authors have been given prominence in a new library, located in a two-story open space in the heart of the hotel that was formerly the Tea Court Lounge. A grand bookcase, accessible to guests, spans the height of the room, and showcases the signed editions. There also is a fireplace clad in white handcrafted artisan tile and a new herringbone wood floor.

A three-dimensional city map is behind the front desk. Architectural columns in the lobby have been clad in acrylic panels featuring hundreds of floating coins that symbolize the "Portland Penny." A penny flip was used to decide between the top choices for naming the city.

A new fitness center is on the mezzanine level in a large space with natural light.

Guestrooms have been made over in natural materials, reclaimed elements and local art. A soft, neutral palate includes whitewashed wood paneled walls and warm wood flooring.
