Q. How do scientists weigh large animals in the wild?
A. All manner of ways, starting with the traditional shooting of specimens from herds, chopping them up and weighing the individual pieces, then adding in an estimate for lost blood and other fluids. But biologists today go to great lengths to find alternatives to killing the animals, says University of British Columbia marine mammal researcher Andrew Trites.
