September brought a shock to this country, and an appalling memory for each of us. As dreadful as the attack on this land was, the blow was not so great that our inherent strengths have been touched. And those strengths include our work ethic, our innovation and our drive to succeed.
An economic slowdown was in sight months before the attack on this country. Consumer spending had decreased, corporate America had trimmed capital spending, profits were down, unemployment was rising steadily and exports had started to slow.
