Design Perspectives: New transparency reveals 'heroic structural efforts'

    Structure is out of the box. In the bridges, transit stations and other large projects of Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava — now on display at the Henry Gallery — a structural system is celebrated for its own sake, taken to new heights of artistic expression, and answerable only to its own internal logic.

    This pedestrian walkway by Santiago Calatrava reconnects the city of Liège, a major node in the European high-speed rail network. Walkways under the tracks also connect the two sides of the new station.
