Eco-friendly Islandwood treads lightly on its earth

  • The Islandwood campus on Bainbridge covers 6 percent of the site, leaving the rest a restored natural landscape and living laboratory.

    All of the buildings at Islandwood are sited in logged areas. Construction activities were restricted to within 15 feet of the building perimeter, to save trees.

    It’s just across the bay on Bainbridge Island, but for many of the Seattle fourth- and fifth-grade students at Islandwood, it might as well be on the moon. Most are from inner-city schools, and some have never been beyond their own neighborhoods, much less into the woods.
