Talking History: Columbia City apartments breathe new life into former abbey
Whilst all adaptive re-use projects have something of a novelty about them due to the nature of working with historic buildings, the Columbia City Abbey Apartments at 3902 S. Ferdinand St. are really something unique to behold. This project saw a 1923 abbey complex transformed into 14 apartment units, a publicly accessible plaza, and two commercial spaces.
Allied8 designed the 18,000 square-foot adaptive re-use project which took a year and half to design and around four and a half years to build. “We do a lot of adaptive re-use projects but this one was certainly unique both in terms of scale and the building typology,” Leah Martin, founder and partner of allied8, shared.
