3-year closure for Tacoma bridge?

TACOMA — The city of Tacoma says it will be at least two to three years before Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge can reopen after the Federal Highway Administration last Friday recommended its closure for safety reasons. The bridge connects the cities of Tacoma and Fife.

The closure centers around the bridge's load rating. The most recent rating was conducted in 2019, but wasn't considered complete due to the unknown condition of the bridge's non-redundant steel tension members and connections, which are covered in dirt and debris. A federal audit of the city's inspection in June noted certain panel points on the lower chord of the bridge were not visible during the inspection.
