CARBONADO, Pierce County — The Washington State Department of Transportation is working on a planning study addressing transportation needs for the Carbon River Valley after the Carbon River/Fairfax bridges had to be shut down last month, closing off Northwest access to Mount Rainier National Park.
The 103-year-old bridge's closure was due to deterioration of the steel structure, making the bridge no longer safe to travel. Some community members and emergency vehicles are stuck taking a protracted detour through back roads to travel through the area.
