CCM: Construction pros earn initials

  • Somewhat like an AIA designation for architects, construction managers can now put CCM -- Certified Construction Manager -- by their names.

    Watch for new Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designations on business cards, letterheads, e-mails and contract signatures from Pacific Northwest construction managers who qualify for the prestigious but still rare honor.

    Professional certification for construction managers is now available through the Pacific Northwest chapter of the Construction Management Association of America in Bellevue.

    The certification is recognition of each individual construction manager’s experience and knowledge in the field of project management, reflecting a commitment to the "practice and ethical standards" of the profession, the development of the person’s professional capabilities and working for the advancement of the profession "for the benefit of all who practice or use construction management services."

    Troy Pyles, president of the Pacific Northwest regional office of Vanir Construction Management Co., is president of the Pacific Northwest chapter of CMAA; George Jackson, Tacoma Public Works Department, is vice president; and George Banning, KJM Associates, is secretary/treasurer. The chapter’s directors include Paul Berry, city of Seattle; Ed Field, URS Corp.; Harland Falkin, Falkin Associates; and H. Donald Laford, URS Corp.

    In recent years, the role of construction managers has become increasingly important for guiding, directing and completing major private and public projects to completion, on-time and on-budget. Now, like architects, engineers and other skilled professionals, construction managers are working to elevate their own roles by certification.
