Wire thefts costly problem for WSDOT

  • Signal crews in WSDOT's Olympic Region must put off regularly scheduled work to replace stolen wires.

    Thieves broke into this WSDOT junction box along Interstate 5 in Tacoma, making off with 700 feet of copper wire and disabling portions of the highway illumination system. Repairs were expected to cost $2,500.

    Noticed any streetlights on the blink recently? The problem could be a lot more serious than burned-out bulbs.
