Rainier Beach Community Center and Pool opened in September at 8825 Rainier Ave. S.
The $25 million center was built on the site of the former community center and pool.
Designers set goals of reducing energy and water use. The building is set to earn LEED gold.
The center includes a gym, multipurpose room, kitchen, computer lab, arts and crafts room, a recreational pool with waterslide and wading pool, and a lap pool.
Heat-recovery dehumidification units were used along with radiant slab heating, ground-source heating and cooling, and evacuated tube solar water heating. Activity and gymnasium spaces are cooled through natural ventilation.
Rainwater provides 90 percent of the water for toilets and urinals.
Construction materials came from the old center, including wood beams for siding and concrete foundations for fill.
