Masonry Institute honors its members

The top winners of the Masonry Institute of Washington's annual Excellence in Masonry Design program were Mary Gates Hall at the University of Washington, the Barkley II building in Bellingham and the Children's Theatre Technical Pavilion in Seattle. All three projects received Honor Awards. The institute also handed out four Merit Awards and four Citation Awards.

Barbara Headrick, the institute's director, said the contest has been held for over 20 years. She said it honors those who design and build with masonry.

Mary Gates Hall included restoring and building an addition to the 1928-vintage collegiate building.

The Barkley II project is a four-story, 72,000-square-foot office building decked out in a brick veneer exterior with architectural precast elements and some EIFS. Structural steel construction was used along with poured concrete floors. Finishes include a sidewalk canopy system, aluminum storefront windows, and slate and granite in the lobby.

Barkley's project team included: Ross & McClure Architects, R&D Masonry and Impero Contracting.

The three-story Seattle Children's Theatre Technical Pavilion houses scene, prop, costume and paint shops, along with an entire floor of rehearsal studios and classrooms. The project was designed as a semi-transparent loft building with concrete frame and vaulted roof construction. Masonry wings relate the new facility to the materials of the existing Charlotte Martin Theater, SCT's administrative wing, and the nearby Pacific Science Center.

The Children's Theatre project was designed by LMN Architects, the masonry contractor was Barkshire Panel Systems and the general contractor was Sellen Construction.

Winners of Merit Awards were the Fisheries Building at the University of Washington, Kwawachee Center for the Puyallup Indian Tribes, Lowry Wyatt Hall at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, and Whittier Elementary School in Seattle.

Citation Awards were presented for the Golf Course at Newcastle clubhouse, Seattle Prep Academy in Seattle, the AT&T Building in Burien and the Holley residence in Factoria.

For the Fisheries Building, the project team included Bohlin Cywinski and Jackson Architects, masonry contractor Sterling Construction and general contractor Turner Construction. The Kwawachee Center team included Mulvanny Architects, Anderson Masonry and general contractor Tomco Construction.
