Department of Housing and Human Services

Seattle's Department of Housing and Human Services (DHHS) has appointed Larry Taylor as deputy director of the 300-person department which administers and coordinates city, state, and federal funding for programs serving children, youth, families, older adults, and people with disabilities. Prior to joining DHHS, Taylor was the Seattle Center's operations director and served on various community boards, including the Center for Career Alternatives, the Share House, Central Area Motivation Program, Travelers Aid Society, and the Seattle-King County Convention and Visitors Bureau. From 1986 to 1988, he was the executive director of the Central Area Public Development Authority.

The Gilmore Research Group

Seattle-based market research firm The Gilmore Research Group has selected Tim Kula to create its customer satisfaction division. Kula comes to Gilmore Research Group from PMH Caramanning, a marketing services company in Detroit, where he spent four years as director of research. Prior to that, he spent six years as regional manager for Data Resources, a McGraw Hill company, and three years at Bettelle Memorial Institute in Richland as an economist studying product flaws through the U.S. economy. As part of Gilmore's program, the division will use an expert system that Kula developed organizes and analyzes research data, and provides a prioritized listing of problems identified in customer research. The program is being used by several Fortune 500 companies and will be featured in an industry article about market research technology.

Pabla Indian Cuisine

A grand opening celebration will be held today at 6 p.m. for Pabla Indian Cuisine. The new Seattle eatery, located near Pike Place Market at 1516 Second Ave., Suite 101, is owned by P.S. & J.S. Pabla.

Washington Association of County Officials

Janice Michels, director and Superior Court Clerk, King County Department of Judicial Administration, has been elected vice president of the Washington Association of County Officials (WACO). Over the past year, Michels has been chair of the WACO Award Selection Committee and served as a member of the WACO Budget, Legislative and Personnel committees. She is currently chair of a committee working on enhanced collections of criminal costs, and former president of the Washington State Association of County Clerks, a WACO affiliate. Also, Jim Buck, manager of King County Licensing and Regulatory Services, was re-elected to the WACO board of trustees for a two-year term as representative for counties with populations above 500,000. Buck is a member of the WACO Personnel Committee, and is also an active member of one of WACO's affiliates, the Washington State Association of County Auditors. Other executive officers elected to serve on the 18-member WACO board include: Lewis County Clerk Donna Karvia, president; Cowlitz County Assessor Ray Ryan, president-elect; and Kittitas County Auditor Bev Allenbaugh, secretary-treasurer.

Board of Nursing Home Administrators

Jim Bennett, administrator of Belmont Terrace skilled nursing center in Bremerton, has been appointed to the state Board of Nursing Home Administrators. Bennett has more than 10 years of experience in long-term care. He will serve a four-year term on the board, which is responsible for providing guidance on policies and procedures, assisting in the certification and disciplinary processes for nursing home administrators.

Clark Nuber

Troy J. McGill has joined Bellevue-based public accounting and consulting firm Clark Nuber as a manager in the tax department. Previously, McGill spent six years with the Seattle office of a Big 6 firm.

Crowley Marine Services Inc.

Crowley Marine Services Inc., a Seattle-headquartered provider of specialized marine transportation services, will celebrate the grand opening of its newly built retail fuel station in Nome, Alaska with an open house scheduled at the site for Oct. 21. The fully automated, self-service facility is located on the Nome-Teller Highway and features eight fuel pumps, online access for credit or debit cards, and 24-hour service to the general public. It is the company's first retail station for passenger and commercial vehicles in Alaska.

Office of Governor

Gov. Mike Lowry has named Nate Ford, an executive policy assistant with the state Office of Financial Management, to the Washington State Liquor Control Board. He is filling the position being vacated by Joe McGavick, who resigned last month. Ford has extensive experience in workplace drug and alcohol programs, and will emphasize education and prevention efforts during his tenure. A steel worker and boilermaker while in college, he was later elected to the Boilermakers Local #104 and both the Seattle and Puget Sound Metal Trades Council. Ford served as an assistant business manager for the boilermakers group for three years before joining the state's budget office. He joins board members Jack Rabourn and Mike Murphy on the three-member panel responsible for controlling the sale and distribution of alcohol throughout the state.

The Lakemont Company

The Lakemont Company, a new real estate brokerage firm catering to upper-end homebuyers and homebuilders, has opened in Bellevue. Chuck Madison, a principal in the company, was president of East West Partners in Bellevue and project manager for the Lakemont community. Joining Madison in the new venture are Scott Cameron, marketing and sales manager of the Lakemont community, and Harry Frampton III, chairman of East West Partners and a partner in the Vail/Beaver Creek, Col., brokerage firm of Silfer, Smith & Frampton.

Windermere

The Windermere Services Company is restructuring its leadership. The restructuring plan will allow for shared decision-making by a leadership committee that includes Jim Shapiro, chief executive officer, and four co-presidents: Brian Allen, Maria Bunting, Bill Feldman and Jeanne Grainger. Windermere Real Estate also added two new sales associates to offices in the Seattle area. They include: Sandi Lancaster, Burien and Tooley Woods, Federal Way.

Cushman & Wakefield

Cushman & Wakefield recently completed a multiple-party lease transaction for The Boeing Company and Spieker Properties. Boeing was able to proceed with consolidation plans by terminating leases in four warehouses in the Kent Valley Industrial Park one and one-half years early. Spieker, the landlord, benefited because Cushman & Wakefield found new tenants, US Shippers, Alexander Trading and Tasco, who signed long-term lease renewals for 453,000 square feet of space.

Kirkland office building 100% leased

The Houghton View Building, located at 815 Sixth St. S. in Kirkland, is now 100 percent leased. The building is owned by Sedorco Property Partnership. Tenants include Allstate, JR Engineering, Fire Safety, Industrial Visual Communications and NW Citrus.

The Norman Company

Through its subsidiary, Norman Realty Services Inc., The Norman Company has been appointed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court as the liquidating agent for the property management, leasing and sale of the 510,000-square-foot Bank of California Center in downtown Seattle.

Home buying seminar

Cornerstone Home Loan Center is offering a free home buying seminar on Oct. 19, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, at 906 Everett Mall Way, in Everett. The Washington State Housing Commission will sponsor several free home buyer education seminars in the Seattle area. Seminars, which provide training to those intersected in purchasing a first home, will be held throughout October and November.
