Dexter & Chaney Inc.

Seattle-based Dexter & Chaney Inc., a supplier of the construction industry, has named Pat Calkins, training manager, Karen Mayall, support manager; and Debbie Leahy, head of quality assurance. All are longtime Dexter & Chaney employees.

APR Forwarders Inc.

APR Forwarders, a company with offices in Tacoma and Seattle providing transportation services between Alaska and the lower 48, has appointed Rick Carlson to director of Transportation of APR in Anchorage, and Jayne Kelly to manager of sales and pricing in Tacoma. And Cathy Green and Tim Boedigheimer have joined the company as sales representatives.

Seattle Art Museum

The Seattle Art Museum has announced a Black & White Ball evening on May 17 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the museum downtown location where five stages and tented pavilions will feature music, entertainment, and festivities. Eastside Disaster Preparedness Expo

The Eastside Disaster Preparedness Expo, preparing for dealing with a major regional disaster, will be held on Saturday, April 20, at Lake Washington Technical College from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Expo is free to the public.

The Millionair Club Charity Inc.

The Millionair Club Charity Inc., now commemorating its 75 anniversary of service to those in need throughout the greater Seattle area, has opened a Women and Family Center, committed to helping homeless women and families in Seattle. The center is located at 113 First Ave. N., on lower Queen Ann.

University of Washington

Thirty University of Washington students from the School of Business are participating in the General Motors Marketing Internship (GMMI) program. Students divided into three groups of ten have the responsibility of devising a marketing plan for GM's Pontiac Division, through a marketing course. Of the three campaign strategies that will be formally presented to Northwest GM and Pontiac executives, one will be chosen, and the entire class will come together for the implementation of the plan in late May.

The Sutor Group

Robert E. Sutor, founding principle of The Sutor Group, has been appointed to the Harborview Medical Center Board of Trustees by King County Councilwoman Jane Hague. Sutor will serve on the board's Finance and Facilities Building & Equipment committees.

Fullman Company

Gerald J. Fullman has become chairman of the board of the Fullman Company and Edwin G. O'Kelly has taken over the duties of president. The mechanical contractor is based in Portland and has offices in Phoenix, Colorado Springs and Bangkok.

Falkin Associates

Harlan Falkin, president of Falkin Assoc. Inc. of Seattle., has become the first construction manager in Washington to achieve certification under the new national CM Certification Program of the Construction Management Association of America. The program requires a minimum of a four-year college degree in a CM-related field, four years of direct responsibility for construction management, eight additional years of experience in the design and construction industry, letters of recommendation from clients, completion of a qualification course and successful completion of an eight-hour certification examination.

Associates Commercial

Associates Commercial Corp. has appointed Matt Deloglos as district sales manager in Portland. Deloglos is responsible for providing equipment financing to construction, mining and forestry companies in northern Oregon and selected counties in south central Washington.

Deeny Construction

Deeny Construction Company Inc. recently won the National Utility Contractors Association's William H. Feather Safety Award. The Seattle contractor won the award in the category "0 to 50,000 Manhours."

Fisheries conference planned in Victoria

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- The Sustainable Fisheries Foundation will have a five-day West Coast Conference from April 26-30 at the Victoria Conference Centre in Victoria, British Columbia. Between 500 and 600 scientists, managers, tribal members, resource users and conservationists from throughout the United States and Canada are expected to attend the conference. A goal of the conference will be to establish a shared definition of "sustainable fisheries." Information will be exchanged on the status of salmon and steelhead resources throughout the region. Common goals will be identified in terms of what can be achieved through economic, social, legal, institutional and management reform. William Ruckelshaus, former director of the Environmental Protection Agency, will deliver the keynote address at the conference. Earth Day tree plantings on Duwamish River

SEATTLE -- Residents and public officials can get their hands dirty Saturday planting 1,400 native trees and shrubs at the Port of Seattle's Terminal 105 on the Duwamish River along West Marginal Way South. The Earth Day planting at the industrial site is taking place in conjunction with EarthWork Seattle's restoration efforts around the city Saturday. Department of Energy lab offers web site

RICHLAND -- The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory at Richland and Sequim is one of nine U.S. Department of Energy national, multi-program laboratories that conducts research to solve problems in the areas of the environment, energy, health and national security. Staff members at the laboratory are working on more than 1,500 research projects. The laboratory's annual budget is more than $500 million. Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus, Ohio has managed the laboratory for the federal government since its inception in 1965. People who visit the laboratory's on-line web site can access recent news, review background and archived information, conduct a topic search and link up with a researcher or public affairs staff member. Toxic cleanup projects available on Internet

OLYMPIA -- The underground storage tank (UST) list, leaking underground storage tank (LUST) list, hazardous sites list and tank bulletin can be downloaded from the Department of Ecology's home page on the Internet. To access the lists, click on Site Cleanup after entering the web site. The UST and LUST lists also are available on disks for IBM-compatible computers. The price of each list on disk is $22.14. Environmental Management Expo planned

BELLEVUE -- The seventh annual Hazmat/Environmental Management Expo is scheduled for May 20-25 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. The conference and trade show will feature seminars and workshops on topics such as hazardous waste management, reduction of cleanup costs, remediation efforts at Superfund sites, site assessments, environmental regulations and medical testing for employees. WEIA to focus on the commodity label

SEATTLE -- The Washington Environmental Industry Association (WEIA) is offering a workshop called "How to Avoid the Commodity Label" from 2:15 to 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the Washington Mutual Building at 1201 Second Ave. in downtown Seattle. Representatives from Martin-Simonds Associates will share advice on how to succeed in the environmental market based on information gleaned from interviews with clients. Topics to be discussed at the seminar include: winning in the face of competition; the seven attributes that clients value most; and what clients mean by "value-added." Ecology awards grants to local governments

OLYMPIA -- The state Department of Ecology has awarded the following grants:

  • $287,000 to the city of Richland to provide safe drinking water where toxic waste has contaminated the city's backup water supply. A treatment facility will be built for water from the Wellsian Way Well Field.
  • $175,377 to the city of Bellevue for projects to prevent waste, increase recycling and keep toxic substances out of the garbage.
  • $74,253 to the city of Kent for use in waste prevention and recycling activities.
  • $50,000 to Clark County to clean up a pile of approximately 43,500 tires near the unincorporated Brush Prairie area.

Rainier Chamber plans valley cleanup

SEATTLE -- The Rainier Chamber of Commerce is in the midst of a week-long cleanup of Rainier Valley in anticipation of Earth Day April 22. Volunteers will pick up litter, mow grass and pull weeds along Rainier Avenue South and Martin Luther King Way. Roses will be planted in Columbia City Saturday. Volunteers will meet for the sixth annual All Valley Cleanup at the following locations and times: Dr. Silver's parking lot, intersection of Martin Luther King and Othello, 9 a.m. today; Ralph's BBQ, 6408 Martin Luther King Way S., 1 p.m. today; Rainier Beach Community Center, 9 a.m. Wednesday; Rainier Foods parking lot, 5803 Rainier Ave. S., 1 p.m. Wednesday; Eagle Hardware parking lot, 2700 Rainier Ave. S., 9 a.m. Friday; Burger King, 2021 Rainier Ave. S., 1 p.m. Friday; Orca at Columbia School, 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
