Quality Food Centers

QFC announced that Jeff Wood has been named Vice President, Grocery Merchandising. Wood assumes this position after 26 years with QFC. Wood began as a clerk for QFC and held various positions at the store level, including store manager, prior to moving to the corporate office in 1983. Wood will continue to oversee grocery and non-foods buying, pricing, schematics and pharmacy.

Stockpot Soups

Mark Fortun, vice president of marketing for Redmond's Stockpot Soups, was named to the American Marketing Association's Corporate Marketing Hall of Fame. He was chosen for his role in developing and marketing fresh, refrigerated soups to foodservice operators. By developing markets throughout the world for this new food category Fortun has helped Stockpot emerge as the largest fresh soup maker in the U.S.

Wheat scientist honored

Robert E. Allan, a retired geneticist with the US Dept. of Agriculture in Pullman, will receive a plaque May 7 from the Federal Laboratory Consortium for his work developing several valuable wheat varieties for Northwest growers. "During the past two decades Dr. Allan has released wheat varieties and genetic stocks that have transformed the industry in the Northwest," according to Floyd Horn, administrator of the USDA Agricultural Research Service. In 1994 Northwest growers planted his varieties on 1.3 million acres and reaped a harvest worth $230 million. He collaborated in his studies with colleagues at Washington State University. Northwest farmers produce most of the nation's soft white wheat with a total value of over $1 billion annually.

UW professor honored

Fred Fiedler, University of Washington professor emeritus in psychology, has been honored by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology at its annual meeting in San Diego. He is one of the world's leading authorities on leadership and managerial performance. His research has revolutionized leadership theory by demonstrating that there is not one best way to lead nor a best leader personality. Leadership performance depends on matching the leadership situation and the leader's personality.

McCormick & Schmick's

Rod Lapasin has been named general manager of McCormick & Schmick's Catering. Lapasin was previously director of catering at the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel in Seattle, a position he held for 10 years. Lapasin will oversee all phases of McCormick & Schmick's Catering operations.

Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers

Michelle Fasser, a concierge at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers, has been accepted to Les Clefs d' Or (The Golden Keys) Association. Les Clefs d' Or Association is an international, professional organization of hotel concierges dedicated to excellence and service. In order to gain entry, members must consistently demonstrate ideals of quality and professional ability. Other Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers Les Clefs d' Or members include head concierge Mary LaMarche, Christy Lingenbrink and Lisa Guttornsen.

Bell Harbor Conference Center

Orin McCann has been named director of food service operations for Bell Harbor International Conference Center. He will be responsible for managing all kitchen, dining room and bar operations and budgets.

Bud Coffey wins MVP

Forrest G. "Bud" Coffey, longtime civic activist and government affairs vice president for The Boeing Company, will receive the MVP Award from the Sports and Events Council of Seattle/King County. Coffey will receive the award May 3 at the Really BIG Sports Auction in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Hotel in Seattle. The award recognizes Coffey's efforts to preserve professional sports in King County, particularly as chair of Home Town Fans. More recently, Coffey has been active in efforts to keep the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle.

Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast announced today that it has sold its third roleplaying line, SLA Industries. Jageeda Publishing, a Seattle-based and newly-formed game company has acquired the publishing rights to the roleplaying line. Wizards of the Coast announced its strategic decision to discontinue the game last December when the company reported it would no longer support its roleplaying lines. Jageeda's initial product plans for SLA Industries include actively pursuing the game's roleplaying & fiction lines. Company principals include Matt Marray, Katherine Sifers, Brian "Chippy" Dugan and Dave Allsop, one of the original creators of SLA Industries.

Shrontz wins E. Donnall Thomas Medal

Frank Shrontz, chairman of the board for The Boeing Company will be honored with the E. Donnall Thomas Medal of Achievement on Saturday, June 15, 1996 in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Hotel. The event is sponsored by the NorthWest Industry Partnership to benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Proceeds from the event will help fund the Hutchinson Center's new clinical research facility at South Lake Union, where a laboratory will be named in honor of Frank Shrontz.

Gonzaga University

Rev. Edward Glynn, of Baltimore, has been appointed the new president of Gonzaga University. He will take over the Jesuit-run university September 19, 1996, succeeding the Rev. Bernard J. Coughlin, who is stepping down after 22 years as president.

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area

Vaughn Baker has been named the new superintendent of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Baker worked for the National Park Service at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve from 1986-1989 and is presently assistant superintendent of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Baker takes over June 10.

Alpha Technologies

Alpha Technologies, a local cable television and telecommunications power supply manufacturer, will provide products to power the video transmission portion of the communication network being deployed for the upcoming '96 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Alpha will provide power supplies and related products to power an extensive on-site video transmission system deployed especially for the '96 Games.

Recreational Storage

Recreational Storage Inc. will open a new facility to serve boat and RV enthusiasts in the South Snohomish/North King County area. Opening on May 15th, Recreational Storage will feature both indoor and outdoor storage in a secure, fenced and lighted facility located at 20631 50th Ave. W. in Lynnwood.

Bell Harbor marine industry shows

The Port of Seattle's new Bell Harbor International Conference Center and Marina will host three concurrent marine industry shows early in September for the tug, salvage, superyacht and Northwest workboat industries. Officials of the shows have now announced a plan to coordinate the shows and provide for common exhibition space. The Superyacht Northwest Show will be held September 11-14 at Bell Harbor on the downtown Seattle waterfront. The show has been expanded with the addition of Workboat Northwest, displaying a range of passenger and other workboats designed and built in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, the 14th International Tug and Salvage Convention and Exhibition will be held in the Bell Harbor Conference Center September 9-13.

Sound Marketing Services

Darrell Oldham, local publishing executive, has founded Sound Marketing Services, a Vashon-Island based consulting firm specializing in the publishing business. Oldham helped found The Seattle Weekly and served as its associate publisher for eight years. He has also worked for the Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer as the advertising marketing manager.

U.S. Coast Guard

Rear Adm. J. David Spade will replace Rear Adm. John W. Lockwood as the Thirteenth Coast Guard District Commander during a cermony at Coast Guard Support Center in Seattle on May 6. Spade is reporting from counter-narcotics task forces in Key West, Fla., where he served as Deputy Commander of Joint Interagency Task Force East and Joint Task Force Four.

German American Chamber of Commerce

The Washington Chapter of the German American Chamber of Commerce has announced the results of its officer elections: Charles Thulin, Attorney at Ekman & Bohrer, has been elected Chapter President and Malte Kleutz of World Traveler, Inc. will serve as Chapter Secretary.

Pacific Coast Investment

Pacific Coast Investment Co. has named Tracy Edgers to vice president at its Seattle office. Edgers will be responsible for originating real estate loans and managing the company's real estate assets.

Weyerhaeuser Real Estate

Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company has promoted J.J. McCament from project manager to general manager of Northwest Landing, the mixed-use, planned community in Dupont. McCament supervises planning, construction, financial management, marketing and sales, and was instrumental in bring Intel Corporation to Northwest Landing. Intel is building a research and assembly campus at Northwest Landing that will eventually employ 6,000 people. Jim Nyberg is taking on expanded responsibilities, which include the new title of general manager at the planned community Snoqualmie Ridge. Nyberg also serves as assistant vice president for Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company's Land Management Division, which owns and manages approximately 14,000 acres in Washington and Oregon and is currently developing the master-planned communities of the Northwest Landing, Snoqualmie Ridge and Meridian Campus.

`Talking houses'

Tom Heriford and Susan Santos, sales associates with the Prudential Michael Smith Realtors in Bellevue, are using the "talking house" as a effective marketing tool. The "talking house" is a transmitter the size of a telephone answering machine that plugs into any grounded outlet inside the house. A message on a yard sign tells potential buyers who are driving by the property to tune their car radio to AM station 1610 and listen to the message which can be up to three minutes in length and heard from 250 to 300 feet away. The agents currently have five listings.

Continental Mortgage

Continental Mortgage Company announced that Rick Peterson has joined the Bellevue branch of Continental Mortgage Company. He will assist real estate agents and home buyers in providing home financing programs. Peterson has over 20 years of experience in the real estate and mortgage industry.

FHA 203k rehab loan workshop

Free workshops are being offered by the Mountlake Terrace Branch of Continental Mortgage Company on the FHA 203k Rehab and Remodel loan, as well as the FHA Plus. The 203k loan allows one to make repairs or improvements to an existing home and roll the cost of the work done into a low interest home mortgage.
