Cindy Steele was recently appointed event coordinator in the Event Service Department of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Steele formerly served as event coordinator for the Seattle International Trade Center, which recently closed.

Northwest Food Strategies

Northwest Food Strategies recently introduced a halibut donation program which distributes halibut bycatch from seafood companies to Puget Sound food banks. Final approval by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council on Sept. 1 marked the culmination of a six-year effort to introduce the program. Northwest Food Strategies, a non-profit Bainbridge Island-based seafood donation agency, has grown to become a leading supplier of protein to food banks nationwide, providing more than 12 million seafood meals in six years.

Metawave Communications

Metawave Communications Corp., a Redmond-based provider of spectrum management solutions for wireless communications, recently hired Victor K. Liang as senior vice president, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication). Liang will head a new organization to design, manufacture and market smart antenna systems for GSM networks. Liang formerly served as managing director of Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications.

Walsh & Associates Design and Marketing of Seattle has expanded its offerings to include full-scale web design and technical support with the addition of its newest associate Rob West. West formerly served as director of interactive development at Internet Power Co. in Seattle.

City of Seattle

The City of Seattle's Public Access Network recently received second-place honors in the local government category of Government Technology magazine's 1998 Best of Web competition. Seattle Public Utilities

Thomas J. Tanner recently joined the City of Seattle Public Utilities as the new branch executive of the Engineering Services Division. Tanner has spent more than 25 years in leadership positions with the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corps, most recently serving as Commanding Officer of the Navy Civil Engineering School in California.

United Grocers

Terry Olsen, former executive vice president of United Grocers Inc., has been promoted to president of the Portland-based grocery wholesaler. Mark Tweedie, former vice president and senior financial officer, was promoted to chief financial officer. Charles E. Carlbom, former president, will continue as chief executive officer.

Craig Kinzer & Co.

Molly McCabe has joined Craig Kinzer & Co. Corporate Real Estate Services as senior associate. She will specialize in complex real estate transactions and related feasibility analyses.

Norris, Beggs & Simpson

Louis R. Zonta has joined Norris, Beggs & Simpson as associate vice president of the firm's commercial real estate brokerage division in Bellevue. Zonta was most recently with Cushman & Wakefield. He has 15 years of commercial real estate experience. Also joining the firm's Bellevue office is Patty J. Sullivan as administrative manager. She has 10 years of office and real estate experience. Sullivan joined the firm in 1995 in the Portland office and was promoted last year to property manager of 1,200 apartments in Portland and Bellevue. She will be responsible for regional office operations and supervising administrative support services.

Coldwell Banker Bain

Coldwell Banker Bain President William J. Riss has announced Coldwell Banker Commercial Bain plans to expand operations in the Puget Sound region. At the beginning of the year, the firm established commercial offices in Seattle and Everett. Now it plans to extend service throughout the region through yet-to-be-announced mergers and acquisitions. The firm has 10 new agents: George Thomas in the Bellevue East office; Joey Scott in Kirkland; Rich Oberhausen in Everett; Sanja Cherskov, Loren Krieger and Sandy Russo in Redmond; Dan Oughterson in Issaquah; Patricia Hairston in Renton/Kent; and Dana Templeton and Tyler Ryte at the Seattle Metro/Capitol Hill office.

Old Seattle Lending Group

Old Seattle Lending Group's willingness to specialize in foreclosure bailouts -- a business many mortgage bankers avoid -- is paying off. The Bellevue-based company recorded a production gain of 125 percent during the second quarter, according to National Mortgage News.

At the malls

Bally has joined the list of tenants at the new Pacific Place shopping center scheduled to open Oct. 29 at the corner of Sixth and Pine. The 1,900-square-foot store will be the second downtown Seattle store for Bally, a Swiss shoe merchant. Bally has a store in the Four Seasons at University and Fourth. Only two retail spaces are left at the newly renovated Sand Point Village now that Spa Scotta has leased space. The full-service day spa opens Oct. 1 at 5414 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle. Sand Point Village officials are seeking a restaurant and a deli for the two remaining spaces that measure 1,800 and 1,300 square feet. And at Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Watch World and Cathy Jean Shoes have leased space. Also, Athlete's Foot has reopened in an expanded space.

Home-buying classes offered

Several seminars for people interested in learning about buying homes have been scheduled. The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle will host a one-hour seminar at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the group's main conference room, 105 14th Ave. To register, call (206) 461-3792.
