Environmental award winners announced

SEATTLE -- Ten local businesses, organizations and individuals are to be recognized tomorrow for their efforts to prevent pollution. The group will receive Environmental Achievement Awards from the Wasee Information Network, a consortium of Puget Sound businesses, agencies, environmental service vendors and environmental groups. The 10 winners are: B&B Auto Repair, Inc.; Circuits Engineering, Inc.; Dr. Ross Fraker, D.D.S.; Omega Pest Management; Photo Dynamics II, Inc.; the Community Dental Health Committee; Seattle-King County Dental Society; The Seattle Aquarium; the Woodland Park Zoo; Steve Ahmann of Pacific Power Batteries; and Connie Bennett of the Port of Everett Marina. Presentation of the awards is to occur from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center on Pier 66. The keynote speaker is Pat Hughes, of the Center for Ethical Leadership.

Forum Thursday on Duwamish water quality

SEATTLE -- The Green/Duwamish Watershed Alliance is sponsoring a public forum Thursday on water quality in the Duwamish River. The forum will focus on human health issues related to the waterway and habitat for endangered salmon. A panel discussion will cover sediment loading, the water column and land use. Participants will come from the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration, the state Department of Ecology and the King County Department of Natural Resources. Kathy Fletcher, executive director of People for Puget Sound, will deliver the keynote address. The forum will attempt to assess the current state of the river, what science can be applied to it and what the future may hold. Briefing set on 30th Ave. SW drainage

SEATTLE -- Pamela Miller, project manager for Seattle Public Utilities, will present a briefing tomorrow on the upcoming 30th Avenue Southwest drainage improvement project. Miller will speak at the monthly meeting of the North Delridge Tri-Council, to begin at 7 p.m. in the Delridge Community Center at 4501 Delridge Ave. S.W. The drainage project will correct storwater overflows on 30th Avenue Southwest by channeling a drainage ditch into underground pipes. Downstream, the water will emerge into a biofiltration swale and then into Longfellow Creek. Work will begin in November or December of this year and proceed for four months, weather permitting. Seminar topics are ESA, water

BELLEVUE -- Municipal and industrial representatives can get an update on the Endangered Species Act and municipal water rights at a half-day seminar Oct. 13 presented by Jones & Stokes and Earth Tech. The free event will begin at 8 a.m. with coffee and rolls and run through lunch at noon at the Redhook brewery in Woodinville. There will be three sessions. In the first, Jones & Stokes attorney Ken Bogdan will discuss proposed listings under the ESA and their implications for Puget Sound cities. Then Seattle attorney Thomas Mortimer will devote the second session to statewide water rights issues, including water supply and environmental compliance. In the final session, Grant Bailey, managing principal of Jones & Stokes' Bellevue office, will provide an update on the status of mitigation banking regulations in the state, nationally, and on proposed new water quality standards. Rick Schaefer, director of surface water management for Earth Tech, will give an update on 303(d) water body listings and the TMDL process in Washington state. Energy conference set for Oct. 8

PORTLAND -- An "energy awareness" conference has been organized by Portland-area energy management and engineering associations. To be held Oct. 8 in Portland Community College's Sylvania Campus Performing Arts Theater, the conference will present information on wise energy use, electric utility re-regulation, and global resources. The event will include displays and information about professional associations and environmental services. Sponsoring organizations include: the Association of Professional Energy Managers; American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Association for Facilities Engineering; Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; Professional Engineers of Oregon; Society of Manufacturing Engineers; Society of Women Engineers; and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. The cost to attend is $49 for members of the above associations and $69 for non-members. Students pay $25. A $10 late registration surcharge will be imposed after Sept. 28. Lease Crutcher Lewis

Seattle-based Lease Crutcher Lewis has hired four new employees and promoted another. Diane Grauer has been promoted to project manager and the new hires include Russell Nash, Kathie Fryer, Jim Rosmond and Duane Klinge. Grauer is managing the company's 401 Elliott office job. She holds a construction management degree from Purdue University. Nash is a project manager in the Special Projects Division. He has 28 years of experience and graduated from the University of Washington. Fryer is a senior estimator with 20 years of experience. She attended Oregon State University. Rosmond is a project manager with over 20 years of civil engineering experience with the Navy. He holds a master's degree in management from the Naval Post-Graduate School. Klinge is a project manager in the Special Projects Division. He has 15 years of industry experience and holds a construction management degree from Arizona State University.

NWCCC awards

The Northwest Construction Consumer Council (NWCCC) recently presented its annual Patrick K. Lyneis Memorial Construction Industry Safety Excellence Awards. The awards are named after Patrick K. Lyneis, a former University of Washington project manager who contributed to the council's safety education programs. The award for safety excellence for owners went to Boeing Commercial Airplane Group for using job hazard analysis on its new headquarters building in Renton. The cost effectiveness award went to Equilon Enterprises LLC of Anacortes for the Washington Puget Sound Refining Company effluent plant upgrade. Two awards for safety went to The Industrial Company of Portland and Dunkin and Bush Inc. of Redmond.

CSI

The Construction Specifications Institute has named Jay L. Schiavo director of market development. He will be responsible for new and renewal memberships and promoting the markets for CSI products, programs and services. Schiavo previously worked 14 years for the National Court Reporters Association.

The Woodmark Hotel

The Woodmark Hotel, at Carillon Point in Kirkland, has appointed Gregory Werry executive chef. Werry formerly served as executive chef at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

Hornall Anderson

Hornall Anderson Design Works, a Seattle-based print and online graphic design firm, has hired Michelle McRae as marketing manager for the branding and marketing team. McRae formerly served as a consultant for AirTouch Cellular.

Washington Credit Union League

John Bechtholt, chief executive officer of TAPCO Credit Union in Tacoma, has been elected to the board of directors of the Washington Credit Union League. The league is the trade association for 183 credit unions in the state.

Davis Wright Tremaine

Rebecca L. Williams, formerly a partner in the Chicago law office of Nath & Rosenthal, has joined Davis Wright Tremaine as of counsel in the Seattle office. Williams, who is also a registered nurse with hospital experience, has been practicing health law for more than 12 years.

Seattle Coffee Co.

Jim Clarke has been promoted to president of Seattle Coffee Co., a cafe-based coffee company marketing Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia brands. Clarke formerly served as senior vice president of sales and marketing.

Partnership for Learning

The National Alliance of Business has named the Partnership for Learning one of the recipients of the 1998 Distinguished Performance Award for State Coalition of the Year. Partnership for Learning is being recognized for its leadership in building public awareness and sustaining political support for Washington state's 1993 School Improvement Act.

Kindred Communications

Kindred Communications, a Bellevue-based marketing communications firm focused on Internet-based business solutions, has added Sal Celis as creative director and Donna Fullerton as director of content development. Celis will oversee concept development, user-interface design and functionality of online products. Fullerton will manage editorial content projects, including development and editing of related communications materials.
