Boka Kitchen and Bar

Boka Kitchen + Bar hired Michael Candelaria as head bartender. Candelaria has 20 years of experience and has worked at La Tavolata, Portage and Cascadia Restaurant.

Advocates Law Group

In the past year, a group of five lawyers established Advocates Law Group. They call it the first truly virtual law firm in Washington. It has no central office, and most members practice from their home offices, with support staff provided by contract workers. Founding attorneys are Rebeccah Graham, Theresa Pruett, Dieter Struzyna, George Tamblyn and Todd Wilson. Tamblyn said this reduces overhead 90 percent compared with traditional law offices. The firm plans to expand to about 20 employees with a range of legal services.

Fred Hutchinson

The Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Breast Health Global Initiative, headquartered at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, will establish the Shanghai Breast Health Resource Center as BHGI's first “learning laboratory” in China. This marks the first such agreement between the Shanghai CDC and a U.S. cancer research center. According to a press release for the group, breast cancer mortality has nearly doubled during the past 30 years.

CollinsWoerman hired Candice Clinton as a senior interior designer, Jessica Chestnut as an interior designer, and Barbara Brandt and Marie Henson as senior medical planners. Clinton has 10-plus years of experience leading project design and construction systems under LEED and Green Guidelines for Healthcare rating systems, including the Harborview Norm Maleng Building and Bridge. Chestnut is returning to CollinsWoerman with experience in office, health care and residential interiors. Brandt has 15 years of experience in health care, including Group Health's medical home prototype. Henson has a background in medical planning, architecture and interior design, including clinic projects with Swedish Medical Group. CollinsWoerman is a Seattle-based architecture, design and planning firm.

Smith

GeoEngineers promoted geotechnical engineers Matt Smith and DJ Thompson to principal and associate, respectively. Smith joined the firm in 1995 and works in the Redmond office. His specialties include shoring systems for high-rise structures, deep foundations, seismic design and urban redevelopment. His recent projects include geotechnical design for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Thompson joined the firm in 1996 and is a geotechnical group manager in Tacoma. His work includes the University of Washington Tacoma campus. The Seattle-based firm provides earth science, engineering and technology.

HDR

Kwan

HDR promoted Pierre Kwan to Northwest and Alaska water treatment business class lead. Kwan is an engineer with 14 years of water industry experience. Since joining HDR in 2000, he has worked on water treatment planning, and design and construction in the U.S., Canada and Middle East. Previously, Kwan was manager of HDR's applied research and technology center in Redmond. HDR is an architecture, engineering and consulting firm.

Tetra Tech

Tetra Tech hired Richard Schaefer as a senior program manager and office manager for the water group in Seattle. He is a civil engineer with 30 years of experience managing planning, design and construction. Tetra Tech is a civil engineering, planning, applied sciences and environmental services firm.

Otak

Loope

Otak appointed R. Nicholas Loope as president and chief operating officer. He will oversee operations and lead Otak's marketing, business development and technology initiatives, working with HanmiGlobal Co. Ltd., the firm's new partner. Loope has been an architect, executive manager, academic and consultant. He was founder of HL Design Build, a founding member of Parker Design International, president and CEO of Durrant Group, and president of Taliesin Architects Ltd. He has participated in projects in the U.S and abroad. Otak is an urban design, architecture, planning and engineering firm.

Aspect Consulting

Brownlee

Aspect Consulting hired J. Ryan Brownlee as a senior water resources engineer in Wenatchee to help with the water resources practice in central and eastern Washington. Brownlee is providing hydraulic and hydrologic engineering on projects for agricultural and municipal uses, and wildlife habitat in Okanogan, Benton and Klickitat counties. Aspect provides water resources, environmental and geologic engineering.
