Seattle law firm Helsell Fetterman hired Michael Spence and Karen Kalzer. Spence has more than 25 years of real estate and land use experience. Kalzer has practiced education and employment law for more than 15 years.
The Washington State Bar Association's World Peace Through Law Section announced it will give awards to Seattle attorney Julia Bolz and professor Ronald Slye of Seattle University School of Law on Dec. 12 in the Century Square Plaza Alki Room. The event is open to the public. Bolz is a humanitarian and social justice activist who has worked on poverty, discrimination, human rights and other political challenges. Slye teaches, writes and consults on international criminal law and transitional justice.
Edward Sullivan, an owner of the Portland law firm Garvey Schubert Barer, was elected as 9th circuit regional vice president for the International Municipal Lawyers Association. The nonprofit advances the interests and education of local government lawyers.

ESM Consulting Engineers hired Zack Lennon as survey manager in the main office in Federal Way. Lennon spent eight years with CLC Associates, three as survey department manager in Spokane. He has been based in the Northwest for most of his career. ESM provides civil engineering, surveying, planning, GIS, mobile data collection and landscape architecture.

Johnson Braund promoted Diana Wogulis Keys to director of housing design and implementation. Keys joined the firm in 1996 and has been a lead project manager and designer on housing projects. Her experience includes single-family, multi-family, mixed-use, hotels and community master planning. She is working on Tukwila Village, with nearly 400 housing units, commercial/retail spaces and health care facilities. Johnson Braund provides architectural design, interior design and planning.

Seattle law office Lane Powell selected Seattle lawyers Joseph Corr, Timothy Jones and Portland lawyers Jeremy Bader and Darin Sands as shareholders effective Jan 1, 2013. Lane Powell is a multi-service law firm with offices in Washington, Oregon and London.

Seattle law firm Cairncross & Hempelmann hired Heidi York as of counsel. York was sole practitioner at The York Law Firm, and prior to that was an associate with Davis Wright Tremaine and Ball Janik.

Bellevue-based Express Construction hired Tak Stoutah as a project engineer. Stoutah graduated earlier this year with a bachelor's degree in construction management from the University of Washington. Prior to that, he spent eight months as an intern assisting with project bidding and closeout at Express.


Douglas Oles and Traeger Machetanz, partners at the law firm of Oles Morrison Rinker & Baker, were selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America 2013 publication. For more than 25 years, Oles has focused on construction, supply, real estate development and intellectual property licensing in the western United States and Alaska. Machetanz's practice focuses on construction and government contracting in Alaska and other states and countries where his clients perform work, including Korea and Iraq. OMRB has offices in Washington, Alaska and California.

The U.S. Department of Energy recently presented Shirley Olinger with the Secretary's Exceptional Service Award for her 32 years of service to the federal government. Olinger managed DOE's Office of River Protection in Richland for nearly three years and worked for 25 years as a senior nuclear manager and leader responsible for some of DOE's most complex projects and programs.
The Construction Management Association of America recognized the Nathan Hale High School modernization project with a global Project Achievement Award at the group's recent national conference in Chicago. Seattle Public Schools is the owner and Heery International provided construction management. The architect was Mahlum and the general contractor was Absher Construction.
Hillsboro, Ore.-based Parr Lumber won a Merit Award for Marketing from ProSales magazine for its “Weekend Warriors” radio program, where expert guests answer questions from listeners on home improvement topics. The two-hour show on Portland radio station KPAM is hosted by Parr employees Tony Cookston and Corey Valdez.
Milgard Windows & Doors of Tacoma was named a Brand Leader in Overall Vinyl Quality by Builder Magazine. The award is determined from a brand-use study conducted by the magazine.
