Washington Appleseed

Helm

Washington Appleseed is giving the Bradley C. Diggs Outstanding Service Award to Lucy Helm, Starbucks executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary, for advancing social justice in her work with MercyCorps, Washington YMCA, Disability Rights Advocates and Parkview Services. The award will be presented at Breakfast with the Best Oct. 14. Appleseed is a legal advocacy nonprofit focused on social and economic issues.

Washington State University

Michael and Virginia Jessemey McCarty won the Washington State University Alumni Association Alumni Achievement Award for service to the community, state and WSU. He was CEO of the Association of Washington Cities. She owns McCarty & Associates marketing firm. Both are active in philanthropic, church and economic development efforts.

REI

REI promoted Rachel Ligtenberg to vice president of retail. She has had a 25-year career with the co-op and leads store design, visual merchandising and flagship strategy. She will focus on new store design concepts. The co-op has 141 stores in 33 states, and four flagship stores: Seattle, Denver, Bloomington, Minn., and New York. The fifth flagship will open next fall in the Uline Arena in Washington, D.C.

Marchex

Marchex, a mobile advertising analytics company, named two new people to its executive leadership team. Kenshoo and Oracle veteran Gary Nafus is chief revenue officer. Matt Muilenburg, who most recently spearheaded international strategy and business development at CDK Global, has joined as senior vice president, customer evangelist.

Red Lion to open NYC hotel

Spokane-based Red Lion Hotels Corp. will open its first New York City hotel early next year after signing a franchise license agreement with an affiliate of Three Wall Capital to convert a 104-room hotel in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn to a Red Lion Inn & Suites. The hotel will continue to be managed by Boast Hotel Management Co. It was built in 2007. Red Lion will update guest rooms, public spaces and technology. Red Lion was founded in 1959 and has 130 hotels.

Kirkland-based Freiheit & Ho Architects hired Brittany Brown as a senior interior designer, Adrian Ho as an architectural designer II, Diane Vandewall as marketing manager, and Clarissa Costa Lima, Emily Stein, Carrie Goforth and Mackenzie Sims as architectural designers. Brown has eight years of experience and specializes in commercial interiors. Ho has three years of experience and specializes in commercial, retail and master planning. Vandewall has 17 years of experience. Costa Lima has two years of experience and specializes in retail and commercial design. Stein holds a bachelor's of architecture from Penn State University and specializes in interiors and design. Goforth holds a master's of architecture from Northeastern University and specializes in commercial tenant improvements and interiors. Sims has two years of experience, with work that includes community-based projects. Freiheit & Ho provides architectural and interior design.

BHC Consultants

Mockos

BHC Consultants hired Greg Mockos as a project engineer. Mockos has nine years of experience that includes domestic and industrial wastewater treatment design and commissioning, CSO conveyance design, pump station and pipeline design, stormwater collection and treatment, and utility system planning. BHC is a Seattle-based engineering, planning and code compliance consulting firm.

SHKS Architects

Lenss

SHKS Architects promoted Laura Lenss to principal and shareholder. Lenss joined SHKS in 2005, and has focused on complex reuse and rehabilitation projects. She is designing the Brain Studio for the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of Washington. SHKS Architects designs buildings and sites.

The Blueline Group

The Blueline Group hired Mitch Boyd as an engineer. He holds a bachelor's in environmental engineering from University of Portland and participated in a culvert design project in Honduras through Engineers Without Borders. Blueline provides civil engineering consulting services.

Daniel I. Neuman has joined Carney Badley Spellman as an associate attorney, advising companies on formation, intellectual property, raising capital, and mergers and acquisitions.

Salish Lodge & Spa

Heikkila

Salish Lodge & Spa named Matt Heikkila executive chef, leading the 40-person culinary team for The Dining Room and The Attic restaurants as well as the new Chef's Studio. He has experience at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine and the private golf club TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, and joined Salish Lodge last year.
