Carney Badley Spellman

Nancy Thayer of Carney Badley Spellman received the 2015-16 NALS Award of Excellence. An independent panel selects the recipient based on professional attitude, legal skills and experience, and service to NALS of Washington, an association of legal professionals.

Pierce County

Peter Ansara has been named director of community connections for Pierce County. He was executive director of the Korean Women's Association and has extensive experience in community programs. He has also worked at Prium Companies and Tacoma Housing Authority.

Propel Insurance

Tacoma-based Propel Insurance said sales executive Michael McCormick has joined the firm's construction practice. Propel offers property, casualty, risk management, workers' comp, employee benefits and personal insurance for businesses and individuals.

Newland hires Yester for Tehaleh

Yester

Newland Communities hired Steve Yester to manage commercial real estate for Tehaleh, the 4,700-acre master-planned community it is developing in Pierce County. Yester will focus 420 acres that could house as much as 4 million square feet of retail, office, industrial, civic or multifamily space. He will work with developers, brokers and others to bring jobs to Tehaleh, which could have up to 9,700 residences. Yester has 20 years of experience and was chief development officer for Point Ruston, a mixed-use community on Commencement Bay in Tacoma. Newland is based in San Diego and bills itself as the largest private developer of planned communities in the U.S.

NAIOP events: WSCC and South Sound

The Washington chapter of NAIOP is holding two events this month: one on the Washington State Convention Center expansion and another on the South Sound real estate market. Matt Griffin of Pine Street Group, development manager for the WSCC project, will discuss the project. The event starts at 7 a.m. May 18 at Four Seasons Seattle. The South Sound event is a collaboration with Commercial Real Estate Women Seattle & Sound, and will have a panel moderated by Cathleen Meyer of Deutsche Asset Management. Panelists are: Jim Jensen of Berkadia, Travis Hale of Panattoni, John Bauder of CBRE and Kyle Prosser of First Western Properties. The event begins at 7:30 a.m., May 24 at Pacific Grill & Events Center, 1530 Pacific Ave. in Tacoma.

HFF handles 1411 Fourth sale

HFF said it arranged the sale of 1411 Fourth, a historic building in downtown Seattle. An entity related to Mack Real Estate Group sold the 15-story, 123,430-square-foot office building to an entity related to Onni Group for $29.6 million. Nick Kucha and Nick Kassab led HFF’s sales team representing Mack Real Estate Group. Mack will focus on multifamily projects in Seattle, through its affiliate Mack Urban.

In Seattle, DCI Engineers promoted Scott D. Erickson to principal and Mark Seiser to associate principal. Erickson joined the firm in 2009 and has worked on high-rise residential, hotel and office projects on the West Coast. His current work includes the 1001 Broadway apartment tower in Seattle. Seiser has worked in drafting at the firm since 1996. He oversees 42 CAD designers supporting projects and guides CAD managers. DCI is a civil and structural engineering firm, with offices also in Spokane, Portland, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Austin and Anchorage.

In Seattle, NAC Architecture hired Amy Shuster and Bingram Lai as designers. Shuster has 19 years of architectural experience on education, commercial, residential, winery and transit projects. She was with Coates Design Architects on Bainbridge Island, doing housing and commercial work including Island Gateway: an office, retail and museum project. She is working on Enumclaw High School. Lai has over 13 years of design, document production and construction management experience. He was with S.M. Stemper Architects working on educational facilities. He is working on Bennett Elementary School in Bellevue. NAC provides planning, design, engineering and capital facilities consulting services.

In Edmonds, Landau Associates hired Jeovani Huerta-Avila as an assistant scientist and Nick Navarre as a staff engineer-in-training. In Tacoma, it hired Raquel Burlotos as a staff engineer-in-training. In Portland, the firm hired Jennifer Nielsen as a project coordinator and Tayler Wells as an assistant scientist. Huerta-Avila holds a bachelor's in environmental sciences and resource management from the University of Washington and will assist with environmental remediation and groundwater monitoring projects. Navarre has a master's in environmental engineering and a bachelor's in civil and environmental engineering from Penn State University. He will assist the environmental remediation group. Burlotos has bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Villanova University. She will assist with environmental, stormwater and civil engineering projects. Nielsen has 24 years of experience with architecture and engineering firms, and a background in business development, marketing and technical editing. She will be responsible for administrative, financial, editing and quality control functions on projects. Wells holds a bachelor's in environmental science from Sacramento State University. He will assist the environmental group on remediation sites. Edmonds-based Landau provides geotechnical and environmental engineering, remediation, and permitting and compliance services.

Mercer Island-based R. W. Thorpe & Associates hired Greg Stuart as a senior associate for land use planning/economics/litigation and promoted Tom Walker to project manager. Stuart has over 30 years of experience in land use and sector planning, urban design, growth management, policy and code regulatory development, and expert testimony with Stuart & Associates in Fort Myers, Florida. Walker has over six years of landscape architecture and project management experience, and has been with R. W. Thorpe for over a year.

Adnan Ahmed joined Stantec's Lynnwood office as information communication technology project manager. Ahmed has over 14 years of experience as an ICT infrastructure specialist, including in the Middle East. He works on health care, data center, airport, high-rise and industrial projects. He was with the city of Toronto and has worked in Stantec's Toronto office. Stantec does consulting in planning, engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, surveying, environmental sciences, project management and project economics.

Torger Erickson joined WHPacific's Seattle office as director of transportation. Erickson has 28 years of transportation, civil and structural engineering experience. He has worked on transportation projects and other civil infrastructure facilities in the U.S. His projects include Sound Transit's Lynnwood Link Extension. WHPacific works on transportation, water resources, environment, development, facilities and energy projects.

Trinity|ERD, a building envelope consulting firm, promoted Darbi Krumpos and Jennifer Stephan to senior project manager. Krumpos is a project manager in the Seattle office, assisting clients on building envelope projects. She will now oversee project managers in Seattle and coordinate closely with the Honolulu office. She was hired almost 21 years ago. Stephan is a project manager in the Honolulu office, and manages that staff. She was hired in 2010, and transferred from the Seattle office in 2011.

Caradigm

Caradigm named Neal Singh CEO, replacing Caradigm founder Michael Simpson, who led the company for four years. Caradigm was chief technology officer for Caradigm and before that was general manager of Microsoft Dynamics. Caradigm is now a wholly owned affiliate of GE Healthcare. Caradigm focuses on software for data control, health care analytics, care coordination and management, and wellness and patient engagement, with products used at 1,500 hospitals worldwide.

Perkins Coie

Perkins Coie said Serena S. Carlsen has joined the Real Estate & Land Use practice as a partner in Seattle. Her practice focuses on commercial property and development, and she was a partner at Stoel Rives. She advises clients on purchases, leases, financing and construction. Tara K. Gorman recently joined the firm in Washington, D.C., from Greenberg Traurig. She focuses on hotel development and acquisitions.
