Mercy Housing groundbreaking

Mount Baker Family Housing & Resource Center

Groundbreaking is set for 11 a.m. Sept. 18 for Mercy Housing Northwest's 95-unit supportive housing project at 2870 S. Hanford St. Mount Baker Family Housing & Resource Center was designed by Runberg Architecture Group and Walsh Construction will build it. Mayor Jenny Durkan, Bill Rumpf from Mercy Housing and Bill Hilf from Vulcan will attend. Paul G. Allen's family foundation contributed $30 million to the project, which also benefits from $5 million from the Seattle Office of Housing and $10 million in tax credits. The former National Pride Car Wash site is one block south of Mount Baker Station. Completion is expected in 2020.

NAIOP heads to Tacoma

NAIOP will hold its South Sound Breakfast at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28 at Tacoma Yacht Club (5401 Yacht Club Rd.). Speakers will include Michael Bartlett of Horizon Partners, Michael Sullivan of Artifacts Historic Preservation and JJ Jordan of Andersen Construction. Details and registration: naiopwa.org.

CBRE hired siblings JJ Shephard and Riley Shephard. JJ makes the move from JLL. Riley returns to the CBRE fold following a recent stint also with JLL. JJ will work in Seattle, and Riley in Bellevue.

Phillips Burgess

Daniel Berner, a former assistant AG with the Washington Attorney General's Office, joined Phillips Burgess. Berner also worked for Seattle law firms Ahlers & Cressman and Rafel Law Group. He focuses on real estate, construction and business law. Phillips Burgess has offices in Olympia and Tacoma.

Sound Community Bank

Heidi Sexton of Sound Community Bank was appointed to the Community Bank Advisory Council of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Sexton is executive vice president and COO at the Seattle-based bank. She will serve a one-year term.

Belladonna

Center for Diagnostic Imaging added Belladonna Breast Imaging Center in Bellevue to its network of 12 outpatient imaging centers across the Puget Sound area. Belladonna was founded in 2010 by Dr. Marita Acheson. Minneapolis-based Center for Diagnostic Imaging operates nationwide.

Member Access Pacific

Seattle-based Member Access Pacific, an aggregator of Visa card services for credit unions, changed its name to Member Access Processing and moved its headquarters from Tukwila to Kent. The company serves more than 100 credit unions in 30 states. Its new home is Suite 600 of Cascade Tower West, 20829 72nd Ave. S., Kent.

Jay Mezher joined Mott MacDonald as digital delivery leader for the North American region. Mezher is an architect with over 20 years of experience. Based in Seattle, he will participate in digital delivery strategic planning and expand the firm's project delivery capabilities. He spent over 17 years at a major engineering firm, and has worked on California High-Speed Rail, LaGuardia International Airport and the Eurasia Tunnel in Istanbul. Mott MacDonald is a global management, engineering and development firm.

Seattle-based architecture and interior design firm Clark|Barnes promoted Adam Gromer to project manager. Gromer has over 10 years of architectural experience in assisted-living, multi-family and hospitality. He works on hotels for brands that include Marriott and Hilton.

Seattle-based Cone Architecture promoted Jamie Yengel to principal. Yengel was hired in 2015, and led land use analysis and feasibilities for residential projects, and managed others through design review and permitting. She worked on urban infill projects at Alloy Design Group in Seattle, and on large civic and cultural projects in Beijing.

In Seattle, Sazan Environmental Services hired Kevin David as a commissioning agent, and Jack Newman and Sam Wright as green building consultants and promoted Max Osgood to full-time engineering technician. David oversees the commissioning and balancing of mechanical systems. Newman and Wright have had careers at the International Living Future Institute. Newman managed the Zero Energy Building Certification Program there, and Wright managed the Living Building Challenge. Their work focuses on net-zero energy and water programs, solar energy storage, materials toxicity avoidance and indoor air quality. Osgood graduated from Seattle Pacific University this year and was an intern at SES. The firm helps optimize building design and performance through third-party review services.

In Seattle, Confluence Environmental Co. hired Suzanne Vieira as a staff scientist. The ecologist and planner works on freshwater and marine projects. She has contributed to environmental impact statements, biological assessments, mitigation plans and critical area reports. She was an intern for Confluence, which delivers natural resource and capital improvement projects.

Bellevue-based Freiheit Architecture promoted Sherri Miller to principal. Miller joined the firm 16 years ago and has been responsible for expanding retail, restaurant, assisted-living and industrial portfolios, and is on the management and executive leadership team. She is leading a team that focuses on industrial and retail projects in the West Coast and Midwest. Freiheit is a commercial architecture and interior design firm.

In Everett, Reid Middleton hired Charles Smith as a senior engineer and Ryan Fox as a designer I. In San Diego, it hired Jenn Ciofolo as a project engineer and Charles Liu as a designer I. Smith has 20 years of experience in transportation engineering in the Puget Sound area. Fox is a recent Gonzaga University graduate and will work on civil engineering projects. Ciofolo has seven years of structural design experience. Liu holds a bachelor's and a master's from the University of California and will do structural design. The firm provides structural and civil engineering, land surveying and permitting services.

Gibbs & Olson, a Longview-based civil engineering and land surveying firm, hired Samuel Barham as a project engineer. Barham has over 13 years of civil engineering experience, with a background in water, wastewater and transportation infrastructure for the public sector. He worked on projects for Longview and Spokane, and Washington State Department of Transportation.

Art Anderson, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, hired Richard Moore as a senior civil engineer. Moore has worked on projects that range from utility and foundation design to land development and heavy civil marine design.

In Portland, Cambia Health Solutions hired Faraz Shafiq as chief artificial intelligence officer. Shafiq has over 17 years of experience in strategy, engineering, analytics and product management. He was global head of data science at Verizon, and led product development at AT&T. Cambia provides regional health care plans.

Trupanion

Trupanion, a Seattle-based provider of medical insurance for cats and dogs, is making a management change: CFO Ian Moffat will head an initiative focusing on food's impact on pet health. Moffat's CFO functions are being handled by existing leadership, primarily TJ Houk and Margi Tooth. The company also appointed Jackie Davidson to its board. Davidson has more than 25 years of executive experience, most recently as CFO at Market Leader.

2019 Teacher of the Year

Robert Hand, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Mount Vernon High School, was selected 2019 Teacher of the Year in Washington. Hand has been teaching at the school since 2013. He will be considered for National Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced next spring at the White House.
