SEATTLE — Pacific Whale Watch Association said now's your chance to see lots of humpback whales feeding in the waters off Victoria and Port Angeles.

PWWA said the “Humpback Comeback” has been talked about for several years, but in the last few weeks crews are reporting unprecedented numbers. Large groups of extremely active whales are spotted regularly, PWWA said in a press release, sometimes as many as 15 or 20.

“It's humpback heaven out there right now,” said Michael Harris, executive director of PWWA, which represents 38 companies in this area. “About 20 years ago or so, we never saw humpback whales out there. Now we're seeing them congregate in these large groups... just an expanse of whales filling the seascape.”

The whales are breaching, pec slapping, rolling at the surface, vocalizing and lunge feeding.

“In 20 years of running whale watch tours, I've never seen anything like what's happening right now in Port Angeles,” said Capt. Shane Aggergaard of Port Angeles Whale Watch Co. “This is truly world-class whale watching.”
