Project of the Month -- Machias school: Bold design for a bucolic setting
The unusual form began with a simple idea: take Glu-lam beams from the old building and set them on end along a curving line. It's a striking effect, like the ribs of a giant whale beached on a country road.
Driving the winding roads around Machias, you can see the best of rural Snohomish County: a mix of working farmsteads, with small stores or gas stations at major corners.
Salvaged structural members are washed with natural light in the library.
