Q. We're starting to do our corporate planning for next year and I'd like to do something different this time. Every year we spend countless hours writing out an annual plan that nobody reads or follows. Is there a good model that you could share that would make the planning process more useful?

A. Yes, there are some good models that will give you what you want. Whether they can help your particular situation will depend on how much attitude adjustment goes along with the new process. If planning is perceived as a necessary evil to "get corporate off my back," then no model, regardless of how great it might be, will change that.
