Managers walk a tightrope. If they lean too much to the right, they fall into the over-controlling pit. Lean too much to the left and they drop right into the jaws of chaos. Control requires power, and it is expressed through assertiveness. But, a conciliatory mindset — a relaxing of the reins of power — is also important. The best managers exhibit both assertive control and conciliation, each brought forth at the appropriate time.
