Jim Swenson has been named an associate at KPFF Consulting Engineers. Swenson, a structural engineer, is currently working on the multiple building expansion of Washington Mutual’s Irvine, Calif., campus with Callison Architecture. He is also working on the Library Road and Stadium Way revisions at Washington State University and the Terminal 91 FAMM facility assessment and upgrade.
Swenson recently completed Maplewood K-8 School and Edmonds-Woodway High School for Edmonds School District with Bassetti Architects, the expansion of Agilent’s Rohnert Park campus, and the Lancaster Mall renovation in Salem, with Callison Architecture.
Established in 1960, KPFF is a civil and structural engineering firm with 10 offices nationwide.
Susan Rakow Anderson was recently promoted to Grade VII project manager at Berger/ABAM Engineers’s Seattle office. Anderson has 21 years experience on transportation, bridge and transit projects. She has worked on major projects in Thailand, Bangladesh, Detroit and Las Vegas and has specialized in seismic and finite element analyses and structure upgrade projects. Her current projects include development of the seismic design criteria for the Seattle Monorail Plan and managing final design of the elevated Link Light Rail McClellan Station and adjacent guideway.
Laura Cociasu has been promoted to Grade III engineer with the Portland office. Cociasu’s civil engineering experience focuses on water resources and wastewater treatment projects. She received her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Portland State University.
In the Federal Way headquarters, Kenneth Bartenhagen has been promoted to Grade II engineer. Bartenhagen’s background includes design and document preparation for development of stormwater, site grading, and utilities for commercial, residential and educational facilities.
Janine LaMaie has been promoted to assistant business development and communications manager. She has seven years experience in the architectural/engineering/construction industry. LaMaie’s background focuses on project management, contract administration, business development and client services.
Berger/ABAM is a consulting firm offering services in the areas of project management, civil and structural engineering, environmental planning and documentation, and construction management and support.
Cathie Carlson recently joined The Shea Group as a senior planner. The Shea Group is a Parametrix company located in Northeast Lacey. Carlson has 10 years of experience in municipal and private sector planning. She has broad-based experience with GMA Planning, from the development of comprehensive plans to developing and implementing zoning, development regulations and design standards. She will be responsible for project management and execution. In addition Carslon is a primary planner for the Buildable Lands Program in Kitsap County.
The Shea Group operates as the Olympia office of Parametrix and is comprised of 16 individuals with backgrounds in civil and transportation engineering, transportation planning, urban/land use planning and landscape design.
PAE Consulting Engineers has two certified LEED accredited professionals on staff: mechanical principal, Paul Schwer, and mechanical designer, Conrad Brown.
Schwer has 17 years of mechanical design experience including heating, ventilation and air conditioning, piping, energy studies and smoke control. He has designed mechanical systems for a number of private and public buildings both nationally and internationally. His designs have included energy efficient local and central air handling systems, as well as central utility plants using co-generation systems, heat recovery chillers, and variable speed pumping systems.
Brown has 10 years of mechanical design experience in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection. He has designed systems for education, commercial, health care and advanced technology facilities. His skills include coordination and interaction with project team members throughout the design and construction phases, computer energy modeling and overall project management. Brown's sustainable projects include Oregon State Fair and Exposition Pavilion, King County Terminal Building and Tualatin Valley Water District.
AHBL announced the addition of several new employees to its Seattle office.
Tim Brockway is manager of civil engineering. He will lead development activities in the Seattle, Eastside and Snohomish County markets, and will provide project support for AHBL's Tacoma office. Brockway is a senior project manager with 10 years of civil engineering experience for site development projects. He has provided engineering services on a variety of projects from planning through design and construction administration. His Puget Sound clients have included CarrAmerica, Eddie Bauer, Microsoft, Murray Franklin, Quadrant and Safeco.
Laura Grignon has joined the Seattle office as senior project engineer. Grignon is a civil engineer with six years of experience and will be working on Eastside Catholic High School, Brighton Elementary School for the Seattle School District and the Christian Faith Center in Federal Way. Owen Dennison is a project planner with nine years of experience. Dennison is a former planner with the city of Renton. Lisa Raflo is a project planner and historic conservation specialist with 11 years of experience. Formerly with the city of Seattle, Department of Design, Construction and Land Use, her background also includes eight years with the Georgia State Historic Commission. Dennison and Raflo are working on the comprehensive plan updates for the cities of Milton and Bonney Lake, and the transportation plan update for the city of Sumner.
Matt Weber joins as project manager in the Tacoma office. Weber is a civil engineer with 10 years of experience in design and management of residential, commercial, school and municipal projects in the public and private sectors. He is currently working on the renovation of Clover Park Technical College, the Lutheran Church of Christ the King and the Autumngrove mixed-use development in Fife.
AHBL offers services in civil and structural engineering, community planning, landscape architecture and land surveying. Founded in 1969 and headquartered in Tacoma, the firm has more than 80 employees and a new branch office in Seattle's Pioneer Square.

Frank Yang was recently promoted to Grade VI project engineer at Berger/ABAM Engineers in Federal Way. Yang has 10 years of experience in performing analysis and design work for waterfront and public works facilities projects. His expertise is in the use of computer programs to ensure successful completion of projects.
Sieu Quan has been promoted to Grade V project engineer. Quan has 11 years of experience with civil engineering design and has a strong background in research and analysis for building structures. He is experienced in the use of computer programs, including finite element, structural and seismic analysis programs.
Rich Davis, has been promoted to senior construction specialist/project manager. Davis has 27 years of extensive experience in field engineering and inspection for transportation system expansions, airfield pavements, marine/waterfront facilities and offshore drilling structure construction. He has provided technical support to design teams in specification writing and review of contract documents for constructability and completeness.
Pamela Rae Henderson, with Roth Hill Engineering Partners, LLC, has been appointed to the city of Seattle Public Utilities Citizen Water System Advisory Board. Her term is for two years. She will volunteer by providing input on issues related to the water supply system.
Henderson has worked for Roth Hill for the past six years providing government relations and community involvement expertise to various water and sewer utilities throughout the Puget Sound.
Roth Hill Engineering is a 30-year-old, 50-person, Bellevue-based consulting civil engineering firm.
Callison Architecture added Eric Lagerberg. Lagerberg, a senior project manager, joins the firm’s retail team as an associate principal focused on delivery of retail design, prototype and roll-out projects worldwide.
Lagerberg brings 15 years of international retail development experience to Callison projects and clients. Among other positions at Starbucks, he served as director of architectural design for Starbucks Coffee Company U.K. in London, leading the U.K.-based design team in brand repositioning and delivery of more than 130 new store locations. Most recently, Lagerberg returned to Seattle as design manager, responsible for development and execution of Starbucks locations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to joining Starbucks, Lagerberg was a member of Callison’s stores team as project manager.
Callison’s clients include Nordstrom, Microsoft, Gap, Eddie Bauer, Boeing, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Guess, Sisters of Providence, Seibu Department Stores of Japan and General Growth Properties.
Denise Storaasli has been hired as Johnson Braund Design Group’s new marketing director. Storaasli has 10 years experience marketing for the A/E/C industry. She will be responsible for business development and marketing, including research, client development, public relations, proposal development and interview preparation. She is a member of the Society of Marketing Professionals and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Western Washington University.
JBDG is multidisciplinary design firm providing architectural and landscape architectural services to clients throughout the western U.S.
Otto Rosenau & Associates, Inc. recently promoted David Lyal to project manager. Lyal joined ORA in 1998 with 17 years of professional experience.
ORA is a leading geotechnical engineering, special inspection and materials testing firm since 1973 with an office and in-house laboratory in Seattle.
Seth Franklin has joined McGowan Broz Engineers as a senior mechanical designer. He has 14 years of mechanical design experience, including experience as an industrial piping designer. At McGowan Broz, Franklin will work primarily on municipal and industrial projects. Previously, he was employed at the Harris Group, Seattle.
Franklin is currently assigned to a hydrant fueling upgrade at Portland International Airport.
McGowan Broz is a mechanical and electrical engineering firm located in Bellevue.
Cascade Designs hired Jeff Bowman for the new position of vice president, outdoor and strategic planning. Bowman will oversee sales, marketing and product development for the outdoor group. He previously directed development of major outdoor-apparel brands such as Polartec and Gore-Tex for Malden Mills and W.L. Gore & Associates. Bowman has also served as principal for Blue Sky consulting services since 2000
