Coffman Engineers hired Svetlana Shapovalova as a structural designer and Jim Ivers as corporate controller. Shapovalova has 18 years of experience as an architectural designer in Ukraine. Most recently, she worked at a civil engineering firm as an AutoCAD drafter/designer. Ivers recently received his MBA and previously worked at a regional tire wholesaler in Vermont.

Cannon Design

Johnson
Cannon Design hired Stephen Johnson as a principal. Johnson will assist with expansion of the firm’s international initiatives and strategic marketing of its national higher education practice. With 35 years of experience in design leadership and practice management, Johnson has a portfolio of work in higher education, the arts and historic restoration. He was project director for the renovation and expansion of the Los Angeles Central Library, the recipient of the American Library Association’s Award for Excellence as well as an AIA Honor Award for Urban Design. He led the design and construction effort for the $50 million renovation and expansion of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, which reopened last year.

Studio Meng Strazzara hired intern architects Guido Seoanes-Perla, Jane Gooding and Lucas Branham and administrative project manager Dion Kuhlka. Seoanes-Perla joins the Woodinville High School design team, where he will use his computer animation and graphics expertise. Gooding is working on Central Washington University’s Nicholson Pavilion renovation and Robert Frost Elementary School for the Lake Washington School District. Branham also joins the Robert Frost Elementary design team. Kuhlka has a background in architecture and is working on projects for the Northshore School District.

NAC|Architecture

NAC Architecture promoted two associate principals, Boris Srdar and Mark McMicheal, to principals. Srdar has worked on some of the firm’s most challenging projects in Europe and the United States. He is working on new schools for Snohomish School District and the renovation of the Carver Academic Facility at Western Washington University. McMicheal is an electrical engineer with the firm’s electrical engineering division. He works on K-12, higher-education, health care, advanced-technology and civic facilities. The firm also promoted three senior associates to associate principals: Dan Jardine, Steve Galey and Matt Rumbaugh. Jardine is a leader of the firm’s health care practice, currently serving as project manager for the new Group Health Bellevue Medical Center and the Highline Medical Center Northwest addition. Galey has managed some of the firm’s largest educational projects and is leading teams on projects for Bellevue and Lake Stevens school districts. Rumbaugh has worked on a range of educational projects, including elementary schools for Snohomish and Bellingham school districts. His past projects include Kirkland Junior High School for the Lake Washington School District.

CDi Engineers

CDi Engineers hired Daniella Moreano as a mechanical designer and Lexa Henske as administrative and accounting assistant at its Lynnwood office. Moreano recently passed the engineer-in-training exam and is working on the Seattle Fire Station No. 2 renovation, Seattle University Lemieux Library renovation and tenant improvement work at Microsoft Building 92. Henske handles front desk and reception duties and assists with accounting tasks.

Giffin Bolte Jurgens Architects

Giffin Bolte Jurgens Architects hired Thane Eddington and Elma Foronda. Eddington has more than eight years of design and health care planning experience. He worked on the OHSU Kohler Pavilion, OHSU Center for Health & Healing, Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center, Pacific Oncology Cancer Center and the Kennewick General Hospital master plan. He is working on projects at Oregon Health & Sciences University and Providence St. Peters Hospital in Olympia. Foronda has more than eight years of experience, with emphasis on schematic design, design development and construction documentation. Foronda is project designer on an expansion of the MultiCare Medical Center Emergency Department and Cancer Center in Tacoma. The firm also hired architectural interns Nathan Potratz and Brian Carter. Potratz is working on projects for MultiCare in Tacoma and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland and Carter is working on projects for OHSU’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, MultiCare in Tacoma and Marine Building renovations in Portland.

Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects

Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects hired interior designers Elen Niamthet and Melissa Eby, drafter Terry McDonald and administrative staffer Rebecca Rickabaugh. Niamthet has 12 years of experience, with past work on the Residences at the Little Nell, a private residence club at Aspen, and the Grand Sandestin Golf Beach Resort in Florida. She is working on two projects in Portland’s South Waterfront: Block 46, a mixed-use project; and Mirabella at South Waterfront, a high-rise senior housing project for active seniors. Eby worked on the OHSU Center for Health and Healing and is working on Mirabella, Trinity Terrace in Texas and the OHSU Physicians Pavilion. McDonald has 5 years of experience working on high-end residential design and is working on the Circa mixed-use project in Los Angeles. Administrative staffer Rickabaugh has 10 years experience in administrative support to the architecture profession. The firm also hired architectural interns Mark Miller, Josh Guerra, Anthony Martinez and Kristen Cunningham. Miller, a LEED accredited professional, spent seven years in Columbus working on residential, public works and loft condo conversions. He is working on the Seven Feathers Hotel addition and remodel. Guerra is also a LEED accredited professional and is currently working on Mary’s Woods, a retirement community, and an apartment project in Portland. Martinez specializes in hotel, resort and timeshare projects. He is working on a reception building for Steamboat Springs, a Wyndham project, and a hotel remodel in San Francisco. Cunningham is part of the team working on Circa.

Otak has named five new principals and promoted five employees to senior associate. Julie Morales, Dyanne Sheldon, Greg Laird, Rich Ragone and Joe Simmler were promoted to principal. Morales, a senior project manager and architect for 20 years, has worked with Otak for seven years; Sheldon has 26 years of experience and has been with the firm for one year; Laird, a senior project manager in Otak's Water and Natural Resources team, has 25 years of experience, eight at Otak; Ragone, has spent 14 of his 19 years in Otak as director of technology; and Simmler, a senior project manager in water and natural resources, has 29 years of experience, five with the firm. The new senior associates are Sharon Nobbe, who has spent 10 of her 14 years as an architect with Otak; John Knutson, a senior project manager on Otak's Water and Natural Resources team who has spent two of his 16 years with the firm; Bill Lawrence, a survey manager who has spent 11 of his 25 years at Otak; In-Tae Lee, a senior bridge engineer with 23 years of experience, four at Otak; and Gary Paul, a senior project surveyor with 21 years of experience, 13 at Otak.

ALSC Architects of Spokane hired Arlin Berge as a project architect/manager. Berge has 25 years of experience and previously worked at RHL Design Group in Colorado. He will manage ALSC's Coeur d'Alene office and is working on the new Panhandle Animal Shelter in Sandpoint.

Kennedy/Jenks Consultants hired Alan M. Zelenka as energy services leader. Zelenka has more than 20 years of experience in power projects and conservation programs and has been involved in energy regulation and policy at the national, regional and local level. Zelenka will lead teams on energy management, energy recovery and climate change mitigation projects.

Freeman Fong Architecture

Freeman Fong Architecture hired Rodrigo I. Del Carpio as a project designer. Del Carpio most recently worked as a design architect for WATG in Honolulu and has eight years of design experience in Mexico City, where he is a licensed architect. He is working on two homes in Sammamish, a courtroom remodel for King County and an addition to the U.S. Forest Service Cle Elum Ranger Station.

Cary Kopczynski & Co. promoted Martin Maingot to associate. Maingot is working on Autopark, a 25-story tower in Seattle, Rollin Street, an 11-story tower in Seattle, and Avalon Towers, a 12- and 19-story mixed-use complex in Bellevue. The firm also hired Nathan Galer as a design engineer, Jason Schrader as IT manager and Kami Leidholm as administrative assistant.
