Project of the Month: Bainbridge museum hides in plain sight

The new museum began with a historic schoolhouse. A transparent “gasket” section connects the historic structure to the addition. Decks and cascading stairways on either side of the lobby blend the structure with its surroundings.

In the identity of places, history is a quiet partner. Like its counterparts in many communities, the Bainbridge Island Historic Society stands in the wings, providing a resource for understanding the past and a foundation for the future. In recent years, the world has become more aware of the institution through researchers such as David Guterson, author of "Snow Falling on Cedars." The acclaimed 1994 novel is about the Japanese American community on Bainbridge, its traumatic World War II uprooting and the aftermath.
