Verizon named Sheila Lau president of its national operations unit for the Northwest. She will replace David Magnant who was recently named Potomac region president for Verizon in Baltimore. Lau is currently based in Dallas and is responsible for Verizon's customer response in the Midwest, South and West. She will assume her new position in Everett on Sept. 1 and will oversee installation, repair, construction and customer service for 1.6 million phone lines in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Northern California.
University of Washington Medical Center has been re-certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for excellence in nursing care. This is the hospital's third certification since it was the first hospital in the nation to achieve magnet status in 1994. The ANCC program was begun eight years ago to identify institutions that provide top-quality nursing care. The Magnet Award is the highest level of recognition for hospital nursing awarded by the ANCC.
George Roni is the new safety manager at Caliber Inspection. Roni will continue in his current position as engineering manager in addition to his new role. Caliber Inspection, located in Seattle, is the largest nondestructive testing facility in the Northwest.
The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce will host a grand opening ceremony on Monday, Aug. 12, for a new Lynnwood business called Plato's Closet. Plato's Closet, located at 18205 Alderwood Mall Parkway, is a national chain that carries re-sale apparel for teens, college students and young adults. Joseph Whitford joined the Seattle office of Davis Wright Tremaine as a partner. Whitford will practice in the firm's corporate finance group. Whitford was previously a partner and chair of the emerging company and venture capital group at Foster Pepper & Shefelman.
Federal Loan Bank of Seattle promoted John Blizzard, Charles Eisman and Lisa Ottoson to assistant vice presidents. Blizzard is the account manager for 70 community financial institutions in Utah and Washington, Eisman is liaison to 74 institutions in Alaska, Western Montana, Seattle and Spokane; and Ottoson was previously the bank's director of product development. The Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle is a member-owned cooperative serving Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Pacific Fishermen named new officers and members to its board of directors. Robert Myrseth was named president; Warren Aakervik, Jr. was named vice president; Ann Salvesen was named secretary/treasurer; and Doug Dixon, Pacific Fisherman's general manager, was named assistant secretary. Elected as new board members are Gunnar Ildhudo, Sr., Jack Knutsen and Jerry Horn. Pacific Fishermen has operated its shipyard in Ballard since 1946.
Senate Majority Leader Sid Snyder has been honored with the William M. Bulger Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award by his colleagues. Snyder, one of 30 nominees, has been part of the state legislature for over 50 years. Snyder represents Long Beach as a Democrat.
Cindy Fanning is the new general manager and Kelley S. Green is the new director of sales at the WestCoast Vance Hotel in Seattle. Fanning was most recently general manager of the Red Lion in Kelso and Green was most recently director of sales at the Savoy Hotel in San Francisco
