Safeco Life & Investments

Safeco Life & Investments named Kevin A. Rowell president of Safeco Mutual Funds. Rowell was formerly head of global relationships for Alliance Capital Management in New York. His appointment makes him president of Safeco Securities, Safeco Services Corp. and president of all the Safeco Mutual Fund Trusts. Safeco Life offers life insurance, annuities, mutual funds, employee benefits and other financial products and services.

Costco Scholarship Breakfast

Actor Edward James Olmos will give the keynote address at the third annual Costco Scholarship Breakfast Thursday, Sept. 19, at Seattle University. Olmos is currently featured in the PBS drama “American Family.” The breakfast supports the Costco Scholarship Fund, which helps underrepresented students to attend and graduate from the University of Washington or Seattle University. Leschi Curves for Women

Leschi Curves for Women will open a 1,200-square-foot health facility at 200 Lake Washington Blvd. on Sept. 16. The facility is owned and operated by Erica Lyon. It will feature 16 strength training machines and aerobic recovery stations. Curves for Women is a fitness and weight loss center franchise based in Waco, Texas, with 4,000 fitness centers worldwide.

Speakeasy

Neville Vere Nicoll has joined the board of directors at Speakeasy. Vere Nicoll is a founding partner and managing director of Cornerstone Ventures. He also serves on the board of directors for Tachyon, OneRealm and SageCircle Group. Founded in 1994, Seattle-based Speakeasy is the largest privately held, national broadband service provider specializing in DSL.

Evergreen, Overlake

Evergreen Hospital Medical Center and Overlake Hospital Medical Center have entered into a joint organization and open-heart surgery program. The consolidated cardiac program will enable Evergreen to develop and provide open-heart surgery and elective cardiac catheterization services with the established Overlake program. Evergreen will provide a 20-bed intensive and coronary care unit with 20 cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Overlake is the only Eastside hospital currently offering heart surgery. Overlake provides an 11-bed coronary care unit; a 40-bed progressive cardiac care unit and a 25-bed cardiac medical short stay unit, with a staff of 22 cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.

Wirtz has been with Mayes for the last 10 years and is currently heading the inspection team at the University of Washington Law School project. ClearPoint named Matthew M. Kremer a consultant in benefit plan analysis, communication strategy, and developing and tracking benefit plans for companies in the Western United States. Kremer worked with Great-West Life & Annuity. The company also named Kyle Montague a benefits advocate. ClearPoint represents major insurance carriers, benefit services and technology companies in providing coverage and services to its clients. ClearPoint recently affiliated with CP Financial Services to offer 401(k) plans and corporate retirement plans.

Joe Huber joined Sedgwick Rd. as vice president, local broadcast manager. Huber was with Evans, Hardy + Young in Santa Barbara, Calif., and previously spent eight years with Evans Group in Seattle where he rose to vice president/associate director of broadcast. Seattle-based Sedgwick Rd. has more than 88 employees, with clients including Washington Mutual, REI, Washington State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, Continental Mills, Seattle Art Museum and the Seattle International Film Festival.

Seattle Weekly

The Seattle Weekly appointed Tim Appelo senior arts writer. In his newly created position, Appelo will focus on local and national arts and culture. Appelo was with Amazon.com, where he was editor for bestsellers, entertainment, biography, history and art. Appelo was a staff writer for the Seattle Weekly from 1978-1985, served as film critic at The Oregonian and has been published nationally. Appelo will report to the Weekly's culture editor, Mark D. Fefer who will continue to oversee the Weekly's arts coverage.

University of Washington

The University of Washington and Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to offer a certificate program in project management at the Bainbridge High School.
