Talaris Research Institute has partnered with marital and family researcher Dr. John Gottman for future research projects. Gottman is the author of "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child" and has received numerous awards for his research on marriage and parenting. The Talaris Institute is a Seattle-based nonprofit that sponsors research on how childrens' brains work and provides information to parents, caregivers, childcare providers and educators.
The board of directors of Columbia Banking System named Melanie J. Dressel as president and chief executive officer. Dressel will continue to serve as president and chief executive officer of Columbia Bank, its commercial bank subsidiary. William T. Weyerhaeuser will continue to serve as chairman. Weyerhauser had been serving as interim chief executive officer for Columbia Banking System since July 2002.
Gary Tomlinson joined Aventail as chief architect of the company's SSL VPN product line. Previously, Tomlinson was CTO for CacheFlow, now BlueCoat Systems, a Web security appliance provider, and has held positions at CacheFlow, Novell and Unisys.
RealNetworks promoted Bob Kimball to general counsel, vice president of legal and business affairs and corporate secretary. Kimball joined RealNetworks in 1999 as associate general counsel, most recently serving as vice president. Kimball will replace Kelly Jo MacArthur who had been the company's general counsel since 1996. MacArthur is currently on leave and will return to the company in a new role later in the year.
Tim Kimsey is the new chief of the Port of Seattle Police Department. Kimsey has been a member of the department since 1973. He currently serves as vice president of the Airport Law Enforcement Agencies Network and secretary of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police. The department also named John Batiste, formerly the assistant chief of police in Tacoma, as deputy chief.
The Washington Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates awarded William H. Mays a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mays helped found the chapter in 1983 and served as its president for two terms. Mays is currently a member of Williams Kastner & Gibbs in its Tacoma office.
Jeff Kray has joined the Seattle environmental law firm Marten Law Group. Kray served in the Washington State Attorney General's office for the past 12 years.

James W. Thompson joined Wells Fargo Private Client Services in Tacoma as a vice president and private banker. Thompson most recently worked in commercial real estate loan origination and portfolio management for Columbia Bank and First Community Bank, and previously worked as a residential real estate branch manager and commercial real estate lender for Wells Fargo.
Washington State Convention & Trade Center named Deryl Brown-Archie vice-chair and Dorothy Bullitt treasurer for its board of directors. Brown-Archie is a tribal attorney for the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. Bullitt is executive director of Seattle Habitat for Humanity. Also serving the board for one-year terms are John Christison, Vic Hawley and Linda Willanger serving respectively as president, vice-president and corporate secretary.
Worktank Enterprise has moved to 2317 24th Ave. E. in Seattle. Worktank provides video production, CD/DVD production, Webcasting, rich e-mail, software demos and integrated marketing campaign management. Worktank will share its new location and partner services with Quesinberry and Associates, a Seattle design firm specializing in print, branding and identity services.
The YWCA Leaders in Progress program is seeking women to volunteer as personal coaches for economically disadvantaged high school girls of color. The program is a 12-month commitment to assist teens in achieving their goals. Information is available by calling (206) 461-4443.
