John Daley is interim president of Bastyr University. He succeeds Tom Shepherd, who will take a new position on the East Coast. Daley was executive vice president and provost. Daley had planned on retiring next January, but will stay until a new president is selected. Bastyr University is located in Kenmore and is known for its work in natural healing.
Lynnwood Convention Center appointed Sharon Grosse director of sales and marketing. Grosse will place advertising and oversee public relations. Grosse has worked in the hotel and meeting industry since 1989, helping create the Snohomish County Lodging Association. Lynnwood Convention Center is located at 196th Street Southwest and 37th Avenue West. The 55,000-square-foot center is set to open in the spring of 2005.
Mike Echelbarger, president of Lynnwood-based Echelbarger Properties, was named the recipient of the South Snohomish County Chamber's John M. Fluke Sr. Community Service Award. Echelbarger is chair of Lynnwood Public Facilities District. The chamber presents the award Oct. 20 at its dinner at Mill Creek Country Club at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is $50 per person. United Way of King County seeks 250 volunteers to help immigrants, refugees and low-income families prepare federal income tax forms. The nonprofit needs people with Spanish, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Tagalog and Russian language skills. The free tax-preparation program is open to all taxpayers from January to April 2005. Volunteers are expected to help more than 4,000 individuals and families file. Bellevue's TeleSym, a producer of secure mobile solutions, named Ken Myer senior vice president of sales and marketing. Myer has more than 20 years of high technology executive experience. Myer was vice president of Active Voice Corp., where he led worldwide marketing, sales and customer services teams. He spent 15 years with IBM Corp., where he held executive positions.
Joanne Blackburn was selected as the Washington state representative to the Defense Research Institute, an organization of defense trial lawyers and corporate counsel. The institute provides educational and informational resources to 22,000 members. Blackburn works on insurance coverage and civil defense practice at the law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer, which has more than 130 lawyers in offices in Seattle, Portland, New York, Washington, D.C., and Beijing.
Fisher Plaza announced Rustic Canyon Partners signed a lease to base its Northwest operations there. Rustic Canyon Partners manages $700 million in venture capital investments. It has offices in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley. Former Microsoft manager and local venture capitalist Jon Staenberg leads the Seattle office. Fisher Plaza is a 300,000-square-foot multi-use facility.
