Winners of the "Best in the Northwest" competition among family-owned businesses were announced by the Family Enterprise Institute of Pacific Lutheran University. Finalists included James G. Murphy Co. of Kenmore, Lake Chelan Building Supply of Manson, Lindal Cedar Homes of Seattle and Rushforth Construction Co. of Tacoma. Pacific Lutheran University is based in Tacoma.
Ryan Swanson & Cleveland recently opened an office at Bell Towne Centre in Lacey. Lawyers Brian Kreger, Steve Maag and Curt Smelser will focus on the South Puget Sound area. Kreger represents insurance, financial service and general business clients. Maag practices health care law, including reimbursement, certification and licensure. Smelser is a land use, real estate and environmental lawyer. He helps private developers take projects through entitlement and permitting process. Ryan, Swanson & Cleveland has 50 lawyers and provides legal counsel for businesses.
Speakers of non-English languages are needed to help citizens apply for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, a special tax benefit for working people who earn low or moderate incomes. Workers who qualify can get back federal income tax deducted from their pay. Tim Fleming joined Caffe D'arte as national sales manager. He has eight years of experience in a family espresso business, including work as sales manager for Burgess Enterprises, a wholesaler for espresso machines. Caffe D'arte is based in Seattle.
Helsell Fetterman selected Michael P. Witek to lead its land use regulation and litigation practice. Witek will focus on land use and environmental issues and has experience in administrative law. Witek was with Perkins Coie. Helsell Fetterman provides legal representation and council in litigation.
Athena Partners is moving from Kirkland to Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. Vulcan has leased Athena 1,100 square feet in the Clements Rice Building, at 534 Westlake Ave. N. Athena works to advance research and education to eliminate breast and gynecological cancers, and says it plans to move in December.
