Holland America

Holland America appointed Janis Jones to manager, direct marketing. Jones brings 13 years of marketing communications experience, most recently serving as a marketing services manager for Eden Bioscience in Bothell. Seattle-based Holland America operates 12 ships sailing from 15 North American ports.

Western Washington University

Seattle City Councilman Richard J. McIver won the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Washington University Alumni Association for his 30-year history of local and national leadership in the fields of housing, planning, urban renewal, and community and economic development. McIver is currently executive director of the Washington Association for Community Economic Development and chairman of the Seattle City Council's Housing, Human Services and Community Development Committee. Also honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards were Carlos Buhler, Suzanne Beske-Diehl and Jimmy Diehl.

United Way of King County

Washington Mutual took top honors at United Way of King County’s Spirit of Caring Awards ceremony with the Spirit of Puget Sound Award. The award recognizes community involvement and a consistent pattern of outstanding campaign results over time. Washington Mutual’s campaign raised an estimated $1.75 million in King County, with half of that going to United Way of King County’s Community Safety Net Fund. Kimberly Morris Thill is Washington Mutual's community campaign director. Other business recognized at the awards event were Virginia Mason Medical Center, University Volkswagen Audi, the law firm Preston Gates & Ellis, Microsoft, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, United Parcel Service, Seattle Mariners and Mulvanny G2.

Wittco Systems

Wittco Systems, a firm specializing in document management and digital imaging technologies, with offices in Oregon, Washington and California, has purchased most of the assets of Business Equipment Bureau, a Portland firm that has been an authorized dealer of Toshiba and Minolta office equipment for the past 20 years. Wittco will integrate Business Equipment Bureau’s operations into its Hillsboro operations.

Seattle Works

Seattle Works named Alison Carl executive director. Carl was previously executive director of Portland-based VolunteerWorks and CEO of Federal Way Chamber of Commerce. Seattle Works' mission is to foster in young adults a lifetime commitment to community involvement through innovative volunteer activities and educational opportunities.

KAVU

KAVU (Klear Above Visibility Unlimited) has opened a second retail store, this one in Bellevue Square. KAVU, founded in 1993, manufactures and distributes outdoor clothing and gear. KAVU's other retail store is in Ballard.

Savvy Strategies

Savvy Strategies named Maija Gunderson as its new vice president. Prior to joining Savvy, Gunderson served as the chief of staff for Oregon State Senator Tony Corcoran. Savvy Strategies is a Seattle-based public affairs and graphic design firm with a focus on nonprofit organizations, government entities, citizen groups and political committees.

Seattle Public Library

Tim Baker, Denise Harnly, Airyang Julia Park and Elizabeth Umbanhowar have been named to the Seattle Public Library's Citizen Implementation Review Panel. The panel oversees the Libraries for All building program which is improving or replacing 22 branches, building five branches and building the central library. Baker is with the King County Housing Authority, Harnly is associate director of Seattle Neighborhood Group, Park is a planner for Pierce County, Umbanhowar is grants manager at the Wing Luke Museum.

Alteon

FlightSafety Boeing Training International has officially changed its name to Alteon. The company was operating as a joint venture between Boeing and FSI since 1997. Last year, Boeing completed an agreement to acquire all of FlightSafety International's interests in FSBTI. Alteon, a fully owned subsidiary of Boeing, is based in Seattle. It is a global aviation training company responsible for flight and maintenance training in the 100-seat-and-above range of aircraft.

Seattle Goodwill

The Seattle Goodwill store at Rainier Avenue South and South Dearborn St. is undergoing a facelift. Changes include relocating the customer service counter, moving the dressing rooms and installing new cashier stations. The store will remain open throughout the remodel. The remodel is scheduled to conclude in mid June and a grand re-opening celebration is being planned.

Bruning Pottery

Bruning Pottery will celebrate its twentieth year with a week-long event starting May 14. The business is a production pottery outlet located in the SODO district since 1983. Food, beverages, facility tours, free pottery lessons and door prizes will be part of the celebration at the store's location at 2908 – 6th Ave S.
