Focus on the Family

Steve Largent is joining the board of directors of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family. The non-profit organization gives advice, counseling and resources through the media that is intended to "strengthening the family" in the U.S. and worldwide. Largent served over seven years as a Republican member of the U.S. Congress from Oklahoma, and was a wide receiver with the Seattle Seahawks from 1976 to 1989.

Avista Utilities

Lloyd H. Meyers, vice president of energy resources at Avista Corp., will retire this month after a 27-year career with the Spokane energy company where he began in 1971 as an electrical engineer. Long-time Avista employee Ron Peterson will replace Meyers.

Caffe Zingaro

Caffe Zingaro has opened on lower Queen Anne Hill at 127 Mercer St. The business, opened by Nora and Carl Robinson, serves coffee and tea, with evening jazz presentations.

Modern MFG Services

Modern MFG Services of Silverdale has changed its name to Radix Marine. The company also named Kathy Bright, president of its subsidiary Integrated Maritime Platforms International, as president of Radix and added her to the board of directors. Scott Edwards, a retired Navy veteran specializing in physical security and antiterrorism, was named vice president; Monica V. Langfeldt, former tax associate with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, was named chief financial officer; and Roy Rainey, secretary/treasurer of IMPI, was named to the board of directors. Modern MFG contracts with the military to develop small, remotely controlled unmanned boats called USVs.

Short Cressman & Burgess

Bradley A. Evens has been named a member of Short Cressman & Burgess. Evens joined the firm in 2000 as an associate. His practice is focused real estate and commercial litigation groups, and family law.

Davis Wright Tremaine

Cara J. Frey has joined Davis Wright Tremaine's Portland office as an associate. Her practice will focus on mergers and acquisitions, securities law, and employment advising and counseling. Prior to joining the firm, Frey was an associate at the San Francisco firm of Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin.

Star Exhibits & Environments

Star Exhibits & Environments named DeAnna Gorr human resources manager. Gorr was most recently with Summit Envirosolutions of St. Paul, Minn., and was previously human resource administrator for Harmon Glass Co. Star Exhibits specializes in design and manufacture of trade show exhibit and retail selling environments, with headquarters in Minneapolis and offices in Charlotte, N.C., and Renton.

Short Cressman & Burgess

Vincent T. Lombardi is a new member of Short Cressman & Burgess. Lombardi, who joined the firm as of counsel in 2002, concentrates his practice on business, labor and employment, and real estate law and litigation.

Washington State Society of CPAs

Rhona Kwiram of Clark Nuber has been elected treasurer of Washington State Society of CPAs. The WSPCA is headquartered in Bellevue and serves 9,000 Washington state CPAs.

University of Washington

The University of Washington named Jeffrey Simmen director of its Applied Physics Laboratory. Simmen was most recently director of the ocean acoustics program for the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Va. The Applied Physics Laboratory is one of the UW's self-sustaining research centers that is supported by grants and contracts instead of public money. The laboratory received over $43 million in grants and contracts last fiscal year.

Liberty Northwest

Liberty Northwest named John Shaw vice president of personal lines. Shaw was previously regional personal lines manager for Unitrin Multi Lines Insurance in Albany, Ore. Portland-based Liberty Northwest, in its 20th year, has locations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
