Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Leonard Costello was elected president of the state Superior Court Judges' Association, which represents 175 Washington superior court judges. A task force found state and local budgets need to be more balanced, and Costello will work on court funding reforms.
The Washington Supreme Court named Janet McLane interim state court administrator. McLane will work with administrator Mary McQueen until McQueen starts her new role as president of the National Center for State Courts in Virginia.
Seattle-based Washington Research Foundation will donate $5 million to the University of Washington in a new matching program. As part of the program, the W. Hunter and Dorothy L. Simpson Endowed Chair in Bioengineering will receive $500,000 from the foundation and $500,000 from the university's local funds. This is the first of a series of programs that aim to raise $120 million in endowments for chairs, professorships, fellowships and scholarships.
The University of Washington Business School appointed Dr. Christopher Klemm director of the Center for Technology Entrepreneurship. Klemm held academic appointments at the University of Delaware, Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania.
BSquare, a Bellevue-based software, engineering and consulting firm for the "smart device" market, appointed William Savoy to its board of directors. Savoy is a consultant for Vulcan, Paul Allen's investment entity. Savoy also serves as director of drugstore.com. He was president and CEO of Layered, and was also a director of Charter Communications.

Gene Juarez Salons & Spas is opening a new salon in Puyallup's South Hill Mall at 3500 S. Meridian in June. It will be the Bellevue-based company's eighth salon and will specialize in cuts, hair color and conditioning treatments.
Ann Litt and Niko Borrelli were appointed to Westin Seattle's sales management team. Litt is account director and Borrelli is sales manager. Litt has 21 years' of hospitality experience and will market conferences to companies and organizations on the East Coast and Canada. Borrelli will focus on the financial, health care and insurance markets. Westin Hotels & Resorts is owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.
