America's Foundation for Chess

America's Foundation for Chess hired Julie Anderson as director of program development. Anderson was annual campaign director for United Way of King County in Seattle.

Virginia Mason

Virginia Mason Medical Center hired Kate Reed as senior vice president and clinic administrator. She oversees a number of departments including Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery. Reed founded and worked for Innov8 Healthcare, a consulting firm.

CFO Selections

CFO Selections, a Bellevue-based finance and accounting consulting firm, acquired the financial consulting practice of Edmonds-based Next Step Solutions. Dennis Purvine, founder and practice leader of Next Step, will join CFO Selections as senior associate. The Next Step team will be folded in the CFO Selections professional services division.

The News Tribune

TACOMA (AP) — Dale Phelps, The News Tribune's deputy managing editor since 2005, has been named managing editor of the Tacoma newspaper.

The move was announced by Executive Editor Karen Peterson, who moved up from managing editor in August.

As managing editor, Phelps, 50, will oversee the newsroom operation and staff.

Phelps came to The News Tribune as sports editor in 1998. He was promoted to deputy managing editor three years ago. He previously worked at the Kansas City Star.

The Fearey Group, a Puget Sound public relations firm, made a series of new hires and promotions. It hired Jaclyn Anderson and Jennifer Bragg as senior account executives. It promoted Aaron Blank from account supervisor to vice president of media relations, Kate Miller from account executive to senior account executive and Kim Oakley from account coordinator to account executive.

Association of Washington Business

The Association of Washington Business promoted Jocelyn McCabe to vice president of communications. McCabe joined the association in July as director of communications. She has previously served as director of communications for the Association of Washington School Principals and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Expeditors International

Expeditors International of Washington, an global logistics company based in Seattle, hired Bradley S. Powell as chief financial officer. Powell was president, chief financial officer and secretary of Eden BioScience Corp.

The Edgewater Hotel

The Edgewater hotel hired Ric Nicholson as director of sales and marketing, and Roy Breiman as hotel manager. Nicholson worked at The Adolphus, a historic luxury hotel in downtown Dallas and has 30 years of experience. Breiman has 20 years experience as a chef and director of food and beverage. He recently worked at the Salish Lodge & Spa in Snoqualmie.

Susman Godfrey

Law firm Susman Godfrey has created an eight-partner financial fraud task force in its New York office to help clients evaluate claims for losses in response to the economic downturn on Wall Street. Floyd Short, a partner in the Seattle office, is joining the team. He focuses on complex commercial cases and intellectual property litigation.

American Bar Insurance Plans Consultants

Chicago-based American Bar Insurance Plans Consultants has named Seattle Lawyer J. David Andrews as president. He will oversee strategy for a one-year term. Andrews has worked with the association and its affiliates since 1961. He is a senior counsel in the Seattle office of Perkins Coie.

Seattle Genetics

Seattle Genetics in Bothell hired Elaine Waller as senior vice president, regulatory affairs and Christopher Pawlowicz as senior vice president, human resources. It also promoted Jonathan Drachman to vice president, early clinical development. Waller has 20 years of experience and was with Sonus Pharmaceuticals. Pawlowicz has 25 years of human resources experience and worked at MedPointe Pharmaceuticals. Drachman has been with Seattle Genetics since 2004, serving most recently as senior medical director.
