For 20 years, Sandy McAdams had run a remodeling business with her husband. But when the marriage ended six years ago, her livelihood ended with it.

McAdams already knew the construction business could be tough on women -- she's accustomed to being second-guessed by men -- but when it came time to decide how she was going to support herself, she chose to remain in the field and started her own business, Sandy's Design and Remodeling. "I thought about it long and hard," she said of her decision. "But I said, you can do this."
