Casey Family Program

The Casey Family Program, the nation's largest private foster care agency, opened a new $3 million office and counseling center in Seattle's Central District, near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and East Union Street.

Designed by Seattle-based DKA, formerly Donald King Architects, the 15,000-square-foot building was created to help revitalize a part of the Central District and bring services closer to users of the organization's programs.

The Casey Family Program was established by Jim Casey, a Seattle native and co-founder of United Parcel Service. The new office is located a few blocks from Casey's childhood home.

The building includes staff offices, community meeting rooms and a kitchen. The main entrance leads into a curved, two-story space with a barrel truss roof. Many of the offices in the building look out on or have access to private garden spaces. The building is steel framed with a masonry veneer of brick and concrete block in three colors. Gabled dormer roofs and lower parapets were used at the back of the building to reflect the scale of the large older homes across the street.

Donald King was the principal architect, Marc Jenefsky the project manager and Noemi Cortes handled interior design. Turner Construction was the general contractor. Other design team members included civil engineer Taylor Engineering Consultants, structural engineer Peterson Strehle Martinson, mechanical and electrical engineer Path Engineers and landscape architect Nakano Associates.
